What film did you watch last night?

Deadpool and Wolverine.

Was expecting better after it doing so well. I think these days to enjoy Marvel movies you need to have made the brand part of your personal identity, the whole formula leans so hard on fanservice and in-jokes, to the detriment of basics like characters, narrative, pacing, cinematography, they're just not good movies. Watching these movies now feels like a (not very) grown up version of playing with action figures.

Gets a 4/10 for the occasional decent gag.

Becoming Led Zeppelin - Enjoyable, nostalgic, documenting the early years of the band. Great mix of interviews and music which at times is very loud and makes you want more! Now can we have part two. - 8/10

The Box https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362478/

I believe I've seen part of this before, but it must have been a while back, as I didn't recall too much about it.
I find these sorts of films interesting, though, in this case, I'm not sure if I fully followed what was going on some of the time,
so I may have to check out one of those explanation videos for an insight into anything I may have missed.

Great screen presence as per usual from Frank Langella.

Warfare - 6/10

A good enough watch and I was never bored. But proof that a really good movie needs some backstory and world building (for want of a better expression). I thought the end of Civil War hit harder because I was invested in the story and the people more. Still worth a watch in the cinema though ; the sound is brilliant.

Sinners - 8.5/10

Really really good. One or two minor things that prevent higher but lived up to the hype for me.
Debating watching this on Monday. Girlfriend isn’t that interested but feel like it’s one of those she’d enjoy once she gets made to watch it with me :p

House of Gucci. Adam Driver, Lady Gaga!, surprised how much I enjoyed it. Didn't know it was a Ridley Scott film.

Righteous Kill (2008)

It stars Pacino and De Niro, and the rest of the cast is solid too, featuring several fine actors, some of whom are Oscar winners or nominees... There's also 50 Cent.

It's total rubbish. Near enough the entire cast, including the two main stars, are awful. With line deliveries that would make you think that they learnt their lines (from the terrible script) a few minutes before the director yelled action. I'm a fan of Melissa Leo but her single scene is a real low point. Non of the performances made me think that the actor's had put any real thought into their rolls... it's just all so perfunctory. The action is laughable... two old farts who if they were really cops, would have been given golden watches years ago, running round like their in an action film?... it's never quite as bad as that scene in The Irishman but in Righteous Kill, there's much more of it. Plus, without the far superior film to paper over the cracks, Righteous Kill just comes off as streaming content, made to funnel easy, quick money into the stars' pockets. Rather than as the product of earnest creative intent.

3 out of 10.

No Sudden Move

Despite all the right ingredients on paper, it was a flawed film that wasn't very engaging.

The 1950s Detroit was unconvincing, particularly the dialogue which contained modern day sayings.

The entire film is shot with a wide angle lens so it's like watching through a gold fish bowl.

It just seemed like Soderbergh wanted an excuse to team up with some of his old cast and the film was secondary to that.

4/10

(The?) Butterfly Effect - 9/10

Great film, can't believe I didn't watch it sooner.

Only missing one off a 10/10 because I would have preferred a different ending.

I think a negative ending/him being stuck in a 'bad' one could have been better but that would never pass in Hollywood

Really like this film. Shame the 2nd one didn't live up to it.

Watched Sicario again. Perfect film for me. Absolutely love it.

Sinners - 6/10

Going to buck the trend a bit from all the glowing reviews so far. It was 'ok' but really didn't feel anything special, the vampires were a bit lame and there were no surprises.

I don't know if it was just the Odeon we were in but the dialogue was really difficult to follow with their heavily accented mumbling southern drawl, I had to really concentrate to follow what they were saying and my partner just gave up. It wasn't a volume problem, as it was loud in the cinema, just really indistinct with the enunciation.

Warfare (2025) - 7/10

Very realistic and well portrayed with some shocking scenes of modern urban warfare and plenty of grey architecture.

The film focuses on the setting and the action rather than the plot which is summarized as a whole lot of nothing followed by things going wrong.

It’s captivating and refreshing to watch with little heroics or politics and it works well enough as a tribute to those involved, but as a form of entertainment, it lacked purpose.

Brutal, gory and atmospheric with some personal drama and plenty of military procedure.

A Minecraft Movie (2025) - 4/10

A culmination of ideas chained together with little care, sense or continuity enables it to show something different every ten minutes yet still manages to be a little boring.

The art style of the setting and the characters looks great but ultimately, it’s a film made for its fans with little depth given to the concept or the main plot with weak morals and I felt it kind of missed the point of the game.

Still, there’s some good jokes for the adults, Momoa does a great over-the-top performance and Black does a good song at the end.

Nosferatu - 6.5/10

Was close to giving it a seven, but I think I’ve decided I don’t like Nicholas Hoult as an actor in anything other than About a Boy and maybe The Menu or A Single Man.

I really enjoy Robert Egger’s films for the most part, but found this very ‘style over substance’, but what a style it was! (And it looked marvellous on UHD Blu-ray)

Count Orlok’s design was original, and I thought it worked, but he was on screen way too much, which actually worked in reducing the fear factor and took the edge off.

Similarly, it felt like a lot of scenes were just joined together without a coherence or without any real emotional connection and I just didn’t care for any of the characters, besides Lily-Rose Depp’s a little, and it seemed a little OTT in the acting.
