What game wowed you the most when you first played it?

Adding another one:

Team Fortress Classic, this was the first ever game i played online. I remember waiting 9 hours for my 56k connection to download the 100 odd mb patch and then finally firing it up at a stupid hour in the morning.

Me and my mate used come into school after both leaving our PC's on all day downloading the latest CS or Dod patch. We would try and predict what time of the day they would finish at :D I had an ISDN connection so I got 7k a second while my mate got around 4k. Ha, how superior to him I was back then :p

The original Unreal , when you first leave the crashed space ship and walk outside. The Waterfall with flying / hoping animals , never seen anything like it before

well, i seem to be a bit older than most but games i loved were

REVS
I ROBOT
track and field
elite
spy V spy
1942
missile command
Defender

bubble bobble - 1st game ive saw with multi player aspect.

none of them for graphics, but the game play was 12/10 which mattered and most came on one, yes ONE floppy disk.... small, fun and easy to play...

The other game, old arcade one, was with a line graphic, where your ship was ontop of a wire frame shape and the baddies came from the bottom and worked their way up to you and you had to shoot down the segemted areas with your gun and blow them up before they got to the top of the shape. Basic game, but bloody addictive! you moved your ship with a large volume control knob.

PC - Crysis
PS3 - Virtua Tennis
XBox 360 - Gears of war

all of these are purely for graphics, virtua tennis is a weird one I know, but it looks pretty damn good!

Also, the Max Payne suggestions are good ones, brilliant game and bullet time pretty much made my life! I might see if I can find it second hand actually.

I would have to say games that have wow'd me or left me gutted when completed:

FF7
HL1&2
Quake Series
Zelda Series

Edit: Added the GTA series up until 4 which I haven't played due to reasons mentioned in the GTA4 PC thread :)

The first ever one came out at Christmas for PC and it was immense fun and all the controversey that surrounded it made it all that much better :D

Halflife. It was the first time I'd seen a game with dynamic lighting and the storytelling just blew me away.

Also QuakeWorld Team Fortress. 12 vs 12 clan matches were insane. There was no better feeling that unlocking a team's defence on Well6. :)

Thought of another:

Donkey kong country/2/3: The graphics on the snes were amazing and the gameplay was fantastic. The music was great and it was pretty funny in places. Good old rareware!

I'm going to follow the thread title and say what game made me go "WOW", rather than what i just played a lot or thought was good. I have a horrendous memory, so i've been reminded by some by this thread, so i'm trying to think of old games too, but it's hard, i can think of 7:

7. Goldeneye: Perhaps my first venture into competitive multiplayer gaming, where i would compete in magazines, so maybe deserves higher. The game was why i got an N64

6. COD4: Amazing storyline and execution, the ending was immense. Left me saying WOW, as well as my dad.

5. Donkey Kong Country: Best graphics game on the SNES, loads of replayability and the gameplay and graphics wowed me.

4. BF1942: Another game my dad played a lot, though he couldn't get to grips with flying :p. Awesome game, it wowed me how i could drive anything and fly about at will.

3. WoW: Anyone who's played MMO's has got to give the game credit for doing everything good, but nothing perfect. Everything was fun, which is whats important.

2. Planetside: BF1942 but on a grand scale taking over continents and bases MMO style, enough said.

1. Star Wars Galaxies: No game has detached me from the real world like this. It was a real world in itself, felt life-like and truely magical. Never before have i had such wonder, having a feeling that there was this much bigger thing in the game i had to discover, that there were mysteries i hadn't uncovered. The mystery of jedi and such really captured a childlike wonder that i doubt i'll recapture. I can look straight through most games nowadays, inside out i know them and could say "i know how this was done", but SWG always had me wondering...

Hmm, hard call, but I'd probably say Half-Life 2 was the biggest "wow/omg" factor. Especially walking out of the train station for the first time.

Other worthy mentions:

Max Payne - Bullet time sideways jumping around every corner
Call of Duty 2 - Taking and holding Hill 400
Call of Duty 4 - Flashback mission in Russia was amazing
Final Fantasy 7 and 10 - Best ever game stories as far as I'm concerned
Company of Heroes - Was stunned the first time I played this game
Deus Ex - Horrible port, but this game just had "omg" written all over it
Beyond Good & Evil - One of a handful of games that hooked me until the end
Dawn of War - Moving from lowly other RTS games to this was like ":O"

I may get shot for this but my all time favourite wow game is Neocron 1.

I had played mmo games before but this was the first one with some real atmosphere and when it was first released a great community. You felt like you were really a part of the city.

It also had its problems though :D

Rofl, I remember getting 5.5k when all my friends were on 4k~.

Oh how they envied me. Could cut hours off my downloads!
