Snap, XvT was my first ever online game, and i really enjoyed playing it with my first clan there on wireplay, ah the memories. Soon came AvP that was also great.

One of my biggest gripes with modern MMOs is the lack of struggle. When I begin the game, with no money and just the clothes I'm wearing, I want to be completely overwhelmed. Not just with the games complexity, which I'd like to be immense, but I'd also like my avatar to be insignificant. To have to really work my way up the ladder to becoming a competant and (more) poweful adventurer.
Instead, in today's MMOs everything is far too easy to come by. NPCs give away money and items like every day was a closing down sale. And PC power levels are set *way* too high. I don't want my avatar to be able to plough through NPCs with ease from Day 1. In fact, I'd just love it if the first mob I came across absolutely slaughtered me
Let's have more struggle in MMOs. Not only does it select out the morons and ADD people, but it tightens the community bonds and gets people working together. Great!
Try FFO, gill is really hard to get and you need to farm grind, which to me is the only grinding involved and takes bloody ages. You can only solo farm low level baddies that give you next to nothing. Ontop of this you need to skill up your spells/skills on each level which i think is quite a nice touch.
In this however, there's no real pvp system, although you wont be able to solo baddies to lvl up either, it is literally all about team work. Team composition is key ie at least 1 white mage/2 red mages, 1 warrior/paladin, 1 black mage, 1 thief/1 ranger to pull. You also need to comminucate with each other to cause enemy max damage, whilst trying to not to draw to much attention to the healers. So tanks need to aggro, whites need to heal as less as possible, blacks need to watch damage. Anyway you get the jist, and if you want a challangfe start off as a white mage, you cannot solo averaged rated mobs without using your 2 hour skill (another cool thing about FFO). Ontop of that, you also get a main story and lots of side quests, which are all different as far as i know, except the ones where u need to bring x units of this to help bla bla bla.
I managed to get my char to lvl25 on both black and white mage, after that you need to devote at least 4 hours to get to next lvl and probably another 4 more to farm enough to buy the spells. This game is very patience orientated, so i don't think there are that many immature players at high levels. Plus a lot of players help each other out, it also helps if you're good at your job because they will team up with u again and recommend you to friends. Being the team leader is very satisfying when you get things right, which isn't that hard if you know what and how to tell players what to do.
