What gamers want?

That's because, unfortunately, the mass majority of people don't want to be challenged, they just play games for a bit of uninvolving escapism.

Oh I know that, but I know without a doubt there is a niche market for a modern day UO type game. Packed with truely challenging fights, risk vs reward system, *real* PvP etc. Its hard to say really how small the market for such a game would be.

One of the main reasons why almost every MMO in the past 10 years has been a level grinding, uninvolving borefest ( :D ) is because the dev team/publishers know theres a much higher chance of it being sucessful. Developing an MMO is a very expensive thing compaired to single player games or normal online games, not to mention the overheads of staffing/servers/GMs afterwards. The vast majority of game developers will only pump that amount of money into a game is if its been proven to work in the past, and they'll make the money back from subscriptions and game purchases. Its a vicious circle really.

I know a lot of people who have been without an MMO to call home since pre-Trammel UO and pre-CU SWG. They've been going from one MMO to another looking for that old spark that made a game special, i'm one of those people. Looking at the amount of posts on the Darkfall forums the idea of such a game is interesting a lot of the newcomers to MMO's as well as the vet gamers. Thankfully Adventurine is a dev company that, while quite unknown, they know the potential of this kind of game and are willing to take a risk. Hopefully it'll be a sucess, if not another game of this type will come eventually. This genre is still very new and hasn't been explored to the fullest.

Its amazing really how many names on the forums, and in Darkfalls IRC channel, that I recognise from 8-10 years ago from Ultima Online. And the amount of old guilds that have been resurrected for this game.

Damnit, I promised myself I wouldn't get my hopes up for this game incase it didn't succeed. The more I talk about it the harder it becomes to resist!! :o :p

We have had thousands of years of literature, yet the story lines in games are absymal.

What games have got a proper story.

My ideal game would be a remake of morrowind. (obviously different stuff).

I would have a VAST area to explore. When I mean vast area im talking about 100-1000x bigger than morrowind

It would be continually updated for a fee by the developers (Eg new islands, countrires hell even continents :D )

I would not have it multiplayer in the true sense of the word. However you would be able to play it with a few people in the same world. eg in Lan or maybe one or 2 on the internet.

That would be absolutly brilliant.

Graphics neednt be a must. Morrowind OWNED Oblivion, even though oblivions graphics were slightly better :p

Oh yeah for a game with less longitivity, a ULTRA Violent game would be good.

Not this pussy foot soldiers sims etc, with splashes of blood

Im talking about the real mcoy.

Im thinking Postal 2 here. I would love a game to be so irrelevant, politically incorrect and ULTRA violent.

The kind of violence that would make you puke when you go into a butchers store. :D

I've been without an MMO home since EQ (circa 2000). I never experienced UO, but the people who talk about it seem to express very similar attitudes to myself.

One of my biggest gripes with modern MMOs is the lack of struggle. When I begin the game, with no money and just the clothes I'm wearing, I want to be completely overwhelmed. Not just with the games complexity, which I'd like to be immense, but I'd also like my avatar to be insignificant. To have to really work my way up the ladder to becoming a competant and (more) poweful adventurer.

Instead, in today's MMOs everything is far too easy to come by. NPCs give away money and items like every day was a closing down sale. And PC power levels are set *way* too high. I don't want my avatar to be able to plough through NPCs with ease from Day 1. In fact, I'd just love it if the first mob I came across absolutely slaughtered me :p

Let's have more struggle in MMOs. Not only does it select out the morons and ADD people, but it tightens the community bonds and gets people working together. Great!

Bring back the Janes Combat Sims updated to work on SP/Vista and with Nvidia/ATI graphics. Have campaigns that are actually dynamic, such as in Tornado or F16 Combat Pilot from the early 90's.

Less MP and more SP.

More games in the GTA mould with storytelling and freeplay plus the ability to hone and develop your character.

And definitely second the request for a re-issue of the X-Wing etc. games, along with a new gen Wing Commander (bring back Rachel the Mechanic - phwoar). Also Privateer... And Sierra, finish off your Babylon 5 game.

David Braben - finish Frontier 4 and - please - no bugs this time.

Chris Sawyer - create a decent sequel to Transport Tycoon and not the abortion that was Locomotion.

In short, let's get back to the heady days of 1995 - 1997 when there was a new flight and space sim to look forward to every few months.

A remake of Damocles on the Amiga would be good. Bit of an open ended game were you could explore towns and buildings or take a taxi to the next town or hop on a ship and venture off to another planet. How about a small solar system with lots of cities on each planet you can explore in first person etc :)

Hopefully Elite 4 will be like this but Im not holding my breath any longer after waiting 10 years for release! Main point being - open ended and immersion are the two big sellers for me in a game if its done right.

Here's mine:

1. More gameplay. Better gameplay. Longer gameplay. That is all.

I Wish the smaller devs would come back.

PC gaming used to be original and TOTALLY different to that of the games on consoles...

Now its all blurred and a large chunk of the PC game market is simply console ports and console inspired titles.

The smaller devs cant develop a game as without the money it takes to create the fancy textures etc is too much.

Most 14 year olds scoff if a game doesnt look arcade perfect.

Saying that, I keep reading that the average age of the gamer is older than it was around the PS2 era so MAYBE there would be a market for small, Quality games such as the ones found on MSN games to be made that little more "mass market" and released to retail.

The market is different though to how it was back in the day when word of mouth was important. Although games still rely on word of mouth, the major titles also have a large marketing push behind them which the smaller devs cannot compete with.

Another problem for the smaller devs is that the smaller publishers have been forced to close or have been taken over by the bigger ones.

The smaller devs have nobody to publish their work unless they sell their souls to the corporations.

Remember when PC gaming was on 3½ floppys.. the smaller publishers outnumbered the larger ones by a fair few.

Its the smaller devs who often made the better games.

:D now we are talking, this would be totally uber!! X4 COLONIAL FRONTIER.

battle in the final frontier from all out war on a volatile volcanic moon, or eradicating hostile terrorists from a colonial world in out of this world first person action.

To all out dog fits defending the fleet with real time command strategy and voice over communication and squadron commands etc etc ... :)

PS: yes i did get Colonial from battlestar hehehe...

XD-3

More like X4: Deadly Alliance

The allianced Argons and Borons are on the edge of an intergalactic war with the Paranid and Split. It's a space Cold War!
However little do they realise the Kha'ak and Xenon have joined forces to form a Deadly Alliance. They invade and obliterate the Argon sector Omicron Lyrea and leave evidence that it was a Split and Paranid attack. As a result war begins between the Allianced Races, with the Teladi loosing profits from the war.

Mean while the Kha'ak and Xenon focus their attention to the Terran Race and are planning a mass eradication of the people of Earth.

Will the X Universe brush away their differences and defeat the new threat?

Sounds crap on paper, looked good in my head! :p

I want games to be directed with the same taste class and attention to detail as literature and cinema. Not just graphics, but sound, music, plot, characterisation & voice acting, style etc. A page turner of a game.

Above all they should be enjoyable and rewarding to play.

No more 3D space invaders.

As for cinema... a lot of Hollywood productions these days are extremely lacking in substance. Increasingly it's just more of the same old cack aimed at the lowest common denominator. The games industry and Hollywood have a lot in common, really :p
