What going on with the price of dogs

Understandable. I was the same, until teh ex's cats moved in with me and I grew attached. We lost one in an accident after just 3 months and I was devastated. Still am. I rescued another cat a year ago, and I think of her like a daughter. I wouldn't dream of not insuring her and grateful I can afford to do so.

Sadly the insurance we have on the dog is...well...crap for want of a better word. They will cover 80% of the cost, but only up to 500 quid and 500 is going to be way way less than what this will ultimately cost.

I think the only time I've cried since being a kid was when I had to put my dog to sleep.
I cried my eyes out at the emergency vets at 5am in front of two very young female vets. I'm in my 50s.

Worst day of my life in a long long time, they were great, felt bad for them. As emergency vets they probably have to euthanise a lot of pets, cant be fun for them.

I wish we would allow the same mercy and humanity to humans who are in a similar situation but thats a whole other topic.

Yeah its a different topic but I agree completely. I wish my grandad suffering from cancer that eventually spread throughout his body had the same choice.

Had my 17 year old Lab put to sleep about a month ago. Spent a good 45 mins on my own with him after the deed was done. Was tough, but he had an amazing life so ultimately I feel proud but I miss the stupid old git. The surgery sent me a card afterwards, then followed a personal card from the vet herself. I was completely taken aback by it. I must have left an impression.

Our family has never insured a pet though, been very lucky with most of them except one with addisons but he lived till he was 14 still. I don't think insuring them would have cost less than the actual bills over time for all of them.

1) deeply sorry for your loss, losing a dog is devistating, they are real immediate family members.

2) demand for dogs has sky rocketed hence price, adopt.

3) stealing dogs crime has gone up 2000%, I live in a fairly nice place and a woman got attacked by 2 lads the other week for her dog - sadly it's put every dog owner I know on edge, recommended someone who can handle themselves walk the dog now to defend if needed.

4) medical care is expensive, it's well known how high vets bills are - it's simply the cost of private health care. It's why we must 100% protect the NHS & never vote tory, regardless of other political opinion - saving the NHS overrides literally every other political debate - the correct approach is halt the torys in their tracks - make it clear as a nation we'll do that for our NHS - and then spend 5-10 years sorting other issues out.......it will be worth it to keep the NHS.

Sadly I think people are too short sighted or emotionally/patriotically driven to consider putting the NHS before supporting their 'political team/tribe'

Finally, if we are to advance as a country & a species, we should really start an NHS for animals, it makes total sense.

Yeah there will be a crash soon enough.
And the breeders jumping on just recently will probably just dump thier breeding stock if it becomes unprofitable. Many of these people obviously don't care about the dogs.

And yes as people go back to work, and furlough ends and they run short of cash loads. Of these dogs will end up in rescues or out down because there isn't capacity.

Prices will come down soon enough. Probably a lot of good rescue options coming... If rescues were more understanding of a non perfect home.

It is mostly the fashion dogs that need insurance as they are mostly inherently born with genetic defects etc. We have never bought insurance but keep a rainy day fund for such things. After all insurance is calculated risk at the end of the day.

Our Cat is 9 and dog 8 and the cat always getting into fights as well.

We have insurance but it's well cheap for Border Collies. Very few genetic issues and generally a healthy breed.

Any dog can develop an illness though, or break a leg etc and if the risk is lower the insurance cost will also be lower, IMO it is worth having with any pet. Putting money aside is fine as long as it is enough, £10-15k bills are common.

paid £1000 for my cat to have an eye removed last year then another £300 to put it to sleep a few weeks later when it went blind in the other eye

Yes , my last lab had a problem with his Trachea, in the end there wasnt anything they could really do about it without huge risk, but still cost just under £4000 to get to the bottom of it, so i'm insuring the new pup. Any semi major injury and the bills rack up. Its pretty cheap when they are younger, so almost a no brainer.

We do it for people's kids. Those of us that don't have them have to pick up the costs for those that do.

We do a lot of things with extreme bias towards our own species. Extending state support to include the healthcare of animals which are arbitrarily "pets" as opposed to the ones we call "food" or "pests" doesn't sound that great considering the casual way you can obtain and dispose of pets as the whim takes you.

Oh yeah and there's the disgrace of pedigree animals bred for the health defects that make them special. That would get sponsored by the state under such a scheme.

I pay about £150 a year for my 7 year old Collie, he's pretty healthy but I wouldn't put it past him to do something stupid and injure himself running into a door full pelt! I did also only pay £450 for him when I got him.

I never used to have insurance for either of my cats or the dog, but after one of the cats needed some dental work doing (which isn't covered by most insurance anyway), I thought I'd best get them covered as they are getting older. Luckily I've not had to claim for anything yet though
