What going on with the price of dogs

Some members asked why i put my dog to sleep

He had been a very unwell dog for some years and a few months ago he started getting far worst. He was at the Vet on a drip from Wednesday and on Saturday morning the VET recommended to put him to sleep as he was getting worst and not better

This is what the Vet sent to my dog insurance

No human puts their dog to sleep for no good reason. When I had to make the decision I was in bits, it was one of the only times I’ve shed a tear.

Oddly enough, one of our dogs has an infection or something on the end of her nose. Possibly some sort of lupus.

We took her today to a animal clinic in Winchester and they did a consultancy, that cost £300 and now she has to go back on Friday for a biopsy and the biopsy will cost £1500. Thats before we've even reached the point of treatment, so £1,800 just to find out what it is. Insane prices imo, not sure how they expect people, especially during these times, to just have £1800 at the drop of a hat.

Not really the price of dogs I know, more the price of the vets fees

Anybody watched Supervet?
Some of the prices he charges are outrageous however when operating it's like a human operating theatre with several staff.

I've no idea where people get the money from, while we were in the clinic today, I overheard someone whose cat was there for treatment and heard it said that the charge was £6,700 , my jaw dropped. I just sat and thought, almost 7 grand ! I mean, what would have happened if the couple paying didnt happen to have 7 grand knocking about. £6,700 especially during these covid/lockdown times when everyone is supposed to be financially impacted. I found myself wondering if this couples young kids might now miss out on things because of that price. Maybe I'm just not enough of an animal lover or something but my gob was well and truly smacked at the cost.

Yes, my dog just had surgery at similar place. The surgery, the care is exemplary, it is like human care only the staff are better trained.

FWIW my dog is suffering with a degenerative neurological issue and had neuro surgery last week to try and relieve a compression on his spinal cord and stabilise his spine. Total cost so far is over £9k.

Think private healthcare, these specialist referral clinics are like private hospitals with dedicated nursing teams, surgeons, anesthesiologists etc. Most will have insurance to cover many costs, covered for life is the best but the costs are high in later life.

Work colleague adopted an Eastern European dog. No idea how but doesn't surprise me given prices for puppies in the UK.

Dem Easties coming here and stealing all our dogs

The price of dogs is indeed insane at the moment, like the GPU market. I expect a crash on the dog market when people have to go back to work and realise it's hard work taking them for walkies, picking up **** endlessly hoovering fur from every surface while working. And you can't even mine with them

Two examples:

1) A mates dog ran into the patio doors and cracked some of the disks in his spine. He had no insurance and it totaled £8,700. The dog lasted another two years and died of it's injuries.

2) Bloke at work paid out £5000 on the insurance but still owed £4,500 and his dog still died.

I'm clearly working in the wrong industry, well the upcoming vet bill has put pay to the much needed new kitchen we were going to have this year, will be a while again now before we're in a position to sort the kitchen out.

The wife just said in that first example they paid over £3000 in that 2 years so a total of £11,700.

Doesn't surprise me. My ex GF was a vet nurse and she came across all sorts of ops over £15k.

I doesn't surprise me that we think it's high, because maybe we don't have a concept of the cost of medical treatment on the NHS. I dread to think the cost on the equivalent human op. I'm sure you get told if you've got private medical cover or are American.

Insurance is a must unless youre willing to risk letting your pet die untreated.

I get the concept of the cost of medical treatment on the NHS , I think in my case its more to do with I can understand that when its a human life whereas I have more trouble in reconciling it when it comes to an animal, especially if the quality of life the humans who are involved have , is diminished as a result. I wonder how many have had to put themselves heavily into debt for the vets fees. I mean, dont get me wrong, its their choice and all and I guess for some people the animal is like a human family member to them, its just my own view and way of looking at it which is different I think.

Understandable. I was the same, until teh ex's cats moved in with me and I grew attached. We lost one in an accident after just 3 months and I was devastated. Still am. I rescued another cat a year ago, and I think of her like a daughter. I wouldn't dream of not insuring her and grateful I can afford to do so.
