I originally bought AMD 7850 and 7950 to use their stereoscopic 3d stuff, discovered quickly that it was a complete pain.. ie the screen would underscan so I had borders while in 3d but when I alt+tabbed out of the 3d game to change the settings it would revert back to normal on the desktop. grrr.

I solved this problem quickly by buying two GTX 670s. No issues since.

I have a 280x. I bought it over any Nvidia card because I feel it had the best balance between price and performance. The Nvidia alternatives which were prices approximately the same were a bit weaker in my opinion.

Also, I had a 4850 before, and it never caused me any problems. I never had any issues with it, so why change?
