This isn't a new thing I appreciate, but drinking a bottle of Grolsch, the posh one with the swing top cap, and it's rubbish.

I remember Grolsch being really good, as well as others.

Seems at some point, the lager you get in this country changed. It stopped being the actual product, and ended up as some fake mass produced ********, under licence from the original brand?

If you look at the cans/bottles seem to be brewed in about 1 of 5 locations in the UK, and is basically the same thing with a different label.

Admittedly this was about 15 years ago, but when I lived in London the local off licenses would sell the actual stuff, probably because they were importing it in the back of vans from France maybe, but completely different stuff and so much better.

Last time I had Grolsch in these posh bottles it was the original lager, seems even this is now the mass produced ****.

Can you still buy the original product in the country anymore?

That's bizarre, I have literally just opened a swing top bottle of Grolsch. I haven't been drinking much lately and fancied a bottle when I went past it in the supermarket. I agree with you though, I noticed when I got home that it is also only 4%, I'm sure it was higher previously?

Used to be 5% I'm sure.

InBev, Heineken, Molson Coors and Carlsberg.

Your question is in there somewhere. The answer is to, in general, avoid any of the brands that these own.

Grolsch is still brewed in the Netherlands and imported, but as it’s now 4% it’s lost a bit of the depth of flavour that it had. It’s still a nice drop though. Can’t say the same for the UK brewed Staropramen, although I still drink it. Some of my faves:

Lost Lager
Moretti
Camden Hells
Staropramen
Budvar as mentioned above
Paulaner Munich
Angelo Poretti

Madri seems to be everywhere at the moment too, not a bad one either.

Some indie lagers/pilsners are worth a try from some of the smaller breweries.

All the mass produced stuff, my mate simply refers to as 'cooking lager' hahah!

I guess thats why craft beer is taking off so rapid. I much prefer them to you’re generic stuff. I guess our taste change as well but i too have noticed that the % has gone down in a few of the bigger brands. Heineken still tastes like Heineken where every you get it and it’s pretty much all over the world. I do always try the local beer when I’m visiting places.

I have noticed with lager - it tastes better in the country it came from.

Some stuff I never drink here, I drink there. One prime example is San Miguel. If I see craft lager on sale in bar, I get a bottle. In Cordoba, there's a craft lager range called Cordobeer

Going to Valencia region in Sept - probably more beers
