What happens to your Steam games when you die?

My late brother's steam account is lying in limbo now. He died suddenly and unexpectedly last July aged 45.

Obviously, not something you think will happen to you soon. So we had no knowledge of his pin codes, or passwords for email accounts, or any other protected service.

That has caused me to create a special USB stick that will contain all my bank details, card details, and every other internet service and phone details.

Believe it or not I've just written a Will for a client who has left a harddrive with films/music on as well as Steam and a few other online accounts named in there for his brother. It includes his login details for each although these may change so he has stated that he'll have a letter of wishes he keeps updated him self to go along with it.

I've been writing letters to my children now since they were born, the eldest is 5 years old. They are saved in Dropbox and a USB stick along with account info and passwords.

Very sad to hear. :( Are you able to say what's wrong with you?

Cancer in my immune system (a rare, aggressive and resilient type of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma), it's not responded to 4 different types of chemotherapy and clinical trials, and is spreading. Options are now ...very limited indeed. It's in my chest, kidney, lung, stomach and collarbone.

Sorry to hear that fella. We've lost 4 family members to cancer over the last few years and it almost feels like every other week we're hearing somebody or other has had a new diagnosis. Best wishes to you and family.

Sorry to hear but have you researched alternative medicine?

Meaning what? I've had the might of the UK and US pharmaceutical industries and their billions of pounds/dollars of research into cutting-edge immunotherapy etc, as well as my own research into diet and environmental causes. Are you suggesting I try lavender water or acupuncture?

My sincere condolences, and thank you. It's sadly becoming more and more common, even among people like me who are otherwise fit and healthy, eat well etc. Cancer doesn't care or disriminate.

Haha! Brilliant reply :)

Really, really sorry to hear about your situation. I honestly didn't expect to read something like this when I came into this thread, I thought it was more of a general question. I don't know what to say.

My grandmother died of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Sorry to hear this, I hate it when we get sad news on the forums.. it seems to cut deeper than a celeb, even though I've never met them either.

FYI there's a feature on Gmail that'll send a goodbye email if you don't login for x amount of time. I'm not saying you should do this, but if you have someone who you'd want to send an email to but don't want to send it whilst you're still here then it's an option.

As for your original query... easiest way would be to pick a friend and change your account contact email to theirs and give them the password.

:(

I wasn't aware of this, thank you. A posthumous email is a bit creepy and Black Mirror perhaps :)

Edit: S2ep1, Be Right Back (IMDb), if anyone hasn't seen it. An example, like all Black Mirror episodes, of how technology may not be the solution to all our problems. Plus, Hayley Atwell.

Alternative medicine - is that like alternative facts?

My sympathies about your situation.

Try emailing Gabe Newell directly.

I'm not saying that he could sort something out for you or that he will even reply (although he did reply to me when I quizzed him about learning game development).

It's worth a go and you could get an absolute final answer to the question.

So sorry to hear mate. My father has non-Hodgkins lymphoma coupled with a rare blood disorder - touch wood he's not needed any treatment yet. My thoughts go out to you and your family and I hope your worst fears aren't realised, certainly not so soon.

I was thinking about cannabis oil.

I can understand about your denial about billions being spent, but at the end of the day if this stuff doesn't work what will you do?

I might add that alternative medicine has its merits as well as conventional medicine .

Sorry to hear about your illness, hope something works for you soon.

A friend passed away a few years ago, Steam wouldn't release his account to his family which is a shame as he loved gaming. He sadly didn't have time to pass on his log on details.

If I didn't know someone else was using his account and saw him online, I would probably need some therapy.

Crap situation mate, hope things improve for you :(
As to the original question, I think this is one of those times when honesty is not the best option. I would just let someone else know the account details, and not say anything to steam.

Which denial is that exactly? I'll keep trying as many cutting edge immunotherapy-based clinical drug trials as possible until it kills me. I'm less inclined to go with small-sample, anecdotal based semi-science, for dozens of reasons. (For the record, there's still no cold hard evidence about the definite benefits of cannabis oil etc). I trust professors, not internet 'experts'.
