What have you done to your car today?

(from an independent dealer, despite everyone on OCUK saying they're always a rip off)

They are not a 'rip off' in terms of price - often they lead on price as they can hardly compete with glass palaces - but if you are unlucky to get anything wrong with the car it can be a struggle and you don't get the benefit of speaking tot he previous owner and understanding the history of the car.

It is of course entirely possible to get a good car through such a dealer, as you have.

But feel free to continue to misrepresent the point people often make ;)

If something goes wrong and you buy from a private seller, you can be basically certain you won't be getting any help. With an independent, particularly if the failure is pretty catastrophic, you will at least get a contribution or repair attempt.

I bought my new car from a private seller - I've got no problem doing it at all. But I've no idea why you'd choose one over a dealer if both cars are the same price. It's pretty easy to check out any history without the previous owners details - you just call the garage.

Along with a price that reflects this.

Yea, that isn't what I mean't. Thats cool if 'history' is 'stamps'.

I've bought cars privately and from dealers. The private cars involved conversations and cups of tea with really nice chaps who enthused about how much they enjoyed the cars, explained how they looked after them, blah blah blah. The dealer cars came with a book with some stamps in it and absolutely no idea who the previous owner even was until the V5 turned up.

Washed the FSTi and the A2 just before it got dark.

I don't know why, but I like it. A lot.

Gave mine a good clean, but after driving and checked the wheels I have missed bits :(

I need to invest in a cleaning brush :p

Waiting for parts to come and the weather was alright when I finished work so i thought i'd start polishing, and using some clay bar thing? I don't know. The people at work said it was good so I bought it. It makes the paint super smooooth!

She's coming up pretty well so far! :D (Ignore the awful instagram sized picture )

I guess both myself and my dad must have been lucky with dealers then, or you've been unlucky. Both cars were the cheapest decent ones available and came with loads of paperwork, not just stamps in the book.

I recently had the whole "cup of tea and a chat" buying experience and it was indeed a very nice way to buy a car. Didn't stop me being terrified of the gearbox imploding on the way home though :p

Every car dealer I have approached has been a lying scumbag... :p

I went to view a T-Sport at a dealership and the amount of crap he was spewing to try and peddle the sale was absolutely stunning. It got to the point where he was trying to persuade me that grinding noises were "normal" and the worn out tyres/brakes had "plenty of life left in them" and so on.

Walked away and bought one privately a week later...

I found one I liked... he ended up getting the sale for my gran's new car... he was plain, simple, matter-of-fact and gave us more than I asked for after my negotiations...

... I have to admit, I think he is/was a rarity...

... next one I met tried to give me 30% under market trade value for a part-ex

If you recall I found that cheap bodyshop last year who did the DB9 and M5. Well decided to let him loose on my DB9 to sort some corrosion on the driver and passenger door. He had to blend into rear quarters anyway so he can fix that. Then he might aswell go into the sills and redo that. Then he mightaswell go to the front wings and fix that up the chips there, then he might aswell go into the front bumper and sort those chips again. On and the boot lid had a chip in it which he can sort too. So 10 panels to do for £500

Fitted winter wheels and tyres.

As its an STi I wanted something a bit better in the dry than pure winter tyres so went for the new Michelin Cross Climate.

Finding wheels that fit the tyres and also fit over the Brembos required quite a bit of research but in the end it turned out ok.

Stick is 18" wheel with 225/45 R18 V and I went with 17" Impreza STi V7/V8 Gold Alloy Wheels and they fit over the Brembos!!

With 225/50 R17 V (98) Cross Climates

Think it looks quite nice personally. Although the wife now hates the car again. :D

Refitted exhaust properly, now there is no leaks and it's not held on by cable ties. New suspension top mounts for the front, wanted to poly bush them but.. I don't know why I didn't.. The it would all be poly bushed, top to bottom! Doors now open, carpet is clean, new rear wheel bearings and £150 down on more tools :(

Tried to fit a new/upgraded rear anti roll bar.. Failed slightly.

One bolt just isn't coming out so I only have one support mount on - tried a 700ft/lb impact gun and it even bother it.

Drop links seized on the old bar, no good, so have no drop links on at the moment.

Decided **** it and I'm going to take it in to have a "Performance Handling pack" done for £1500 because I cba.
