What have you done to your car today?

Fixed the central locking - the control module needed to be reset, so I disconnected the battery overnight, reconnected it, repaired the remotes, and now both remotes work perfectly along with the "global open/close" feature. Always nice when these fixes are free!

A neighbour who is an ex traffic cop also paid me £200 to borrow it for the weekend, which was nice as I wasn't using it anyway. He's very "by the book" and stuck to limits the whole time he had it (600 miles, some motorway, some town), got it back and the MPG average was showing 33MPG - not bad for a 4.2 V8!

I've since managed to reduce that significantly after having a friendly competition with a Range Rover SVR on the m25 :p

Got it aligned. Was a smidge out :p

I thought mine was out a smidge

Just ordered a 280mm Corrado G60 disc conversion and some Yellowstuff pads for the MX5 should make for a nice upgrade over standard pads and 251mm discs

MoT, passed with one advisory (chipped windscreen, in drivers line but smaller than 10mm).

Got some compliments on the car too, notably the good shape it's in for the age. Always makes it worth it, running an 11 year old car.

Dropped it (2003 MX5) in for an MOT. Fearing a big bill for impending welding requirements, I was surprised when all it needs is a bit of welding near the rear nearside jacking point. Guy reckons it was jacked incorrectly.
Wonder if it has anything to do with Arnold Clark repairing a puncture on my rear nearside tyre last week...

Sigh.

Started shopping for a new car. The wifes Mk4 Mondeo is still having problems with electrical gremlins, which means it has been off the road in total for over a month this year.

We've been lucky that the wife has been on maternity leave so we can get away with one car at the moment - when she goes back to work next year we wont have that luxury.

X Plate e39 530i Sport Auto 120k Miles.

MOT failed, two brake pipes needed from the front to back on both sides, not too bad on a 15year old car tbh, nothing else which was a pleasant surprise.

Given my recent issues with power loss and EML / Check engine light / Traction control lights coming on individually and in unison, I decided to make the trek to an old trusted garage who I've not used for a few years (but who looked after my e36's, e38 and last e39 back in the day, only stopped using them due to moving out of the area) and asked them to look into it for me.
It had the VANOS seals replaced 15k miles ago so I don't think its that.....

They reported no codes bar steering angle sensor which they sorted but said no codes stored or warning lights were lit for the engine, thankfully though all three lights lit up when I picked it up - much to their embarrassment I think! - and it sounded almost as if it had no air filter when you revved it, a very throaty induction sound and slow to rev, so at least they now know what its doing even though nothing is still showing up when its read.

So, its stayed overnight and I have a Mk1 Focus loan car - which makes my 530 at its most unresponsive seem somewhat powerful! - instead of yesterdays Qashqai which I was surprised to find I liked!

Hoping they finally get to the issue with my e39 but I'm not confident tbh, this will be the third place I've tried for a resolution (along with changing various sensors myself) yet still it seems randomly down on power and hesitant, the weird thing is when its behaving it runs - and performs - beautifully, its not a continual fault.

I can see it getting a valet and going on A/T with its new MOT very shortly if this is not resolved, shame, I love the car but am getting thoroughly sick of it running like a dog, my 270k mile 528i ownership was a much more enjoyable experience. :(

What's wrong with it?

What's wrong with it?

Showing error codes P2110 & P0607 which is related to Throttle Actuation control system and ECM / ECU.

Throttle body has been replaced and fault is still present, next up is the ECU which is not cheap :( Got an auto-electrician looking at it today to try and eliminate anything else before ordering the new ECU

Car gets stuck in low-revs / limp mode and displays "engine malfunction", but it's not a persistent fault.

[Edit] This is along with the wiring loom issue we had on an ABS sensor earlier in the year

New door to body weather seal on the MX5 hopefully this means no more water ingress when it rains, no leaks from the passenger side yet but it's seen better days so time order one of those as well

Inlet can sensor (which I replaced 10minths ago) flagged up as faulty, new one fitted, car still has no power.

Another night for it in the garage, beginning to think petrol and a match is the best cure for my 530i ! :(
