minidisc player

Aaaah that takes me back, my mum bought me a Sony md player for Xmas just before mp3 players got big. It was awesome.

Anywho currently own

Sennheiser cx500 - didn't get on with these
Sennheiser hd228 - I really like these, nice and comfy and sound alright too

Running through a sansa clip+ (great little player). I have a few mp3 players

Creative Zen vision M 30gb - power switch is a bit meh
Ipod touch - wifes nicked this
Clip+

Sennheiser HD555, the most comfortable headphones I have ever had and the sound quality is amazing and I also have a sennheiser cx500 earphones but I think they are just a chinese copy because they dont sound as good as I expected and were quite cheap like £20 or something.

How are the 25s for noise leakage?

I had Koss Porta Pro, then Grado SR60, then HD555 and now HD595 because my 555s broke and I got the 595 for less than £80 brand new.

I see no reason to upgrade them unless there's a significant increase in sound quality because these sound superb via my NAD stereo amp but I wouldn't mind picking up a pair of closed back phones for when I don't want to disturb people with sound leakage because the 595s do leak a bit when at high volumes.

I will have to wait for someone to get home so I can listen from the outside. Why is noise leakage important apart from being a conscientious commuter?

You so need to try HD 650s. Well, actually don't as it's cheaper that way. :p

I bought some HD 555s to use when the batteries for my amp ran out (which I used to use to run my HD 580s). There's no comparison between HD 555s and HD 580/600/650 (I own/have owned all three of those). The 555s were good, the 580/600/650s were better.

If you're feeling flush, I recommend Denon D2000s for 'closed' headphones. Used they go for ~£150. They leak a little, and provide some isolation (not much compared with better isolating closed cans), but aren't half as bad as any open/semi-open headphones I've had. If you're commuting, ignore my suggestion as the D2000s are far too big and fragile (they are fantastic for rap and hip hop though).

I am undecided on new headphones for gaming.

I had some NS1000s but they broke so sent them back today and getting a refund. They were ok but can't say I was hugely blown away by em and not as comfy as I would like.

Looking at the Corsairs now the 1300 and the HS1A. For those that have either (seems hard to find 1300 reviews) what are they like? Either a decent replacement for the NS1000s?

Looking through thread the HD555s and 595s also look great. The 595s need an amp though to get the most out of them? Would the FiiO e5 thing be enough?

Na, doesn't answer anything :p
I listen to rap too! Whatever leaks, leaks.

Heh, I didn't have you pegged as a rap fan. You're so well spoken!**

:p True, I have tried a few closed headphones in the past but having used open air half my life I think I would find them too....cramped sound wise :/ I wouldn't mind trying a pair of HD25 though just to sample them. I'm too much in tune with Sennheisers soundstage, it's so open and wide and gives you a sense of openness, something the Grados never did.

I find the HD595 very good for multiple types of music, movies and games though. They're like a perfect balance of detail, directional isolation and bass. Not boomy at all but not overbearing either, just punchy and right, if that makes sense.

I guess it's curiosity at how much different a modern pair of closed backs would be to the 595.

As for the rap music...here's my current playlist :p

**Did you expect a typical accent from someone of my background huh, omg racism!!! :p

I checked out some Denon cans before and the price always narked me off because they seemed to be needlessly expensive when similar specced Sennheisers were cheaper and more comfortable (as is the norm for Sennheiser cans) but comfort is subjective anyway. The most foul cans for comfort I ever tried were Grados, so tight and the pads were crazy. The sound was sublime though.

Richer don't have demo cans, not last time I went in anyway but I will go in some time soon and see if they have various newer models on demo I think!

I have previously owned both the HD595 and HD598 and they are good for certain genres, but I think if bass-orientated genres are your thing the Denons are more suitable. Although, if you are happy with the 595's bass you might find them over-powering. Comfort on Denons is excellent, but despite being "closed" they are more like semi-open.

Aye I don't like overpowered bass, I like bass to be present and be detailed but not be in front of everything else.

The Fugees track "Vocab" is a perfect example of a track where bass biased speakers/headphones can ruin a track. I'm sure this track sounds brilliant to bassheads but to me it sounds best when the bass is there but the rest of the instruments are crystal clear :D

I owned them at different times so it's hard to comment on the sonic differences. I would say if you can afford the 598 you should go for that as it fixes the headband cracking issue and IMO looks better with the cream and wood effect.:D
