what headphones do you own thread - i own dt150's :)

I have a VModa Boom mic nots sure how they will work with my K702.

Excited for the arrival of these, they're half the price of what they used to be.
How does the vmoda boom mic connect the 702s? ...As the 702 do not have 3.5mm male connection

It says this on the moompro - Compatible with all smartphones, tablets, PCs, notebooks and gaming consoles via 3.5mm (1/8") plug and headphones with a 3.5mm (1/8") cable input

Xonar Essence cards will drive the K702's with ease to loud volume level. It's only at high volumes the K702 and it's cousins are harder to drive than a lot of other low impedance headphones.

They can be used fine with a sound card that doesn't have a headphone amp, such as a Xonar DX, as long as the user doesn't expect to be able to turn the volume up loud. Beyond a certain point, something with a more powerful headphone output would be needed, such as an Essence.

It has normal, high and extra high gain options when headphones are connected. I’ll check what the + db for each says in a bit.
Wouldn’t high / extra high gain produce lower audio quality which sort of negates buying high quality heaphones that are harder to drive (unless you spend maybe £500+ on a headphone amp too)

Set the gain to whatever suits you, although it's best to choose a gain setting that allows greater movement on the master volume control; so if 100% volume on lowest gain setting is way louder than you'll ever need, leave it on the lowest gain. There is no advantage at all to choosing higher gain then having to considerably lower the volume.

Regarding whether increasing gain would result in a loss of sound quality; it doesn't produce lower sound quality, it would really be distortion by added noise that is heard. Increasing gain increases the amplification. If there is noise present and you increase amplification, it will also amplify that noise.

Unless you have some interference being picked up by the card or the audio source being played is of poor low sound quality, then you shouldn't have any issues even on high gain setting.

I have a Xonar D2X and an O2 Amp, I am hoping they will suffice.

As with the Xonar Essence; O2 amp will have no trouble driving the K702's to a very loud volume.

You'd need a mini XLR to 3.5mm adaptor. They aren't overly common, but they do exist. They do add bulk and distance from headphone to microphone. Some people are OK with that, but it's certainly not the ideal microphone to use with the K702 and similar variants.

This is the adapter I have. It barely adds any bulk.

What microphone would be idea? Nnot desk mic please, I had a Blue ice. This picked up more keyboard and mouse clicks than my voice

This looks like it - https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/292606147882

TRRS connector? Yes, it would be for connecting a mod mic to AKG K702. Just looking at options as I don’t have any yet

edit, found this. Seems i’m not alone

Why didn’t AKG just have saved everyone the hassle and used a 3.5mm female connection

Yeah I went through a few websites looking for a solution.
It's either have two wires with using the mod mic or buy an adapter and use the vmoda boompro or have a free standing desktop mic.

What did you end up doing?
Free standing desktop mic i tried (Blue snowball Ice) It picked up way too much keyboard and mouse click noise

Probably Antlion Modmic, purely because small mini XLR adaptors are not readily available. I had a job finding one that I could actually order last time I looked into it. Closest I could find was longer than the one that michty_me linked a pic of.

Going slightly off topic... Anyone here using the wireless ModMic?

I don't, but I did see a good video where someone compared it to the wired one. There is another someone posted in another thread some time back, but the guy only tried the wireless one. Hard to gauge how good something is without something to compare to. The other chap did a really good job in comparing them and how they sound.

Anyway; the wireless one is good, but the wired one does sound noticeably better. I supposed it depends whether wireless is important enough for someone to pay twice as much for something that doesn't sound as good.

Don't you then get the bulk of the cable which you have to cable tie with the AKG cable?

Guess that's the only con. As you said to Random Guy Esq, the pros of the wireless is no bulk, but con is it sounds worse for more money

Thanks all for your help, I will look into getting this mini XLR adaptor.

Could you please tell me if this adaptor brings any change to the sound? also how would I be able to split the Mic from the O2 Amp?

I tried using the Boom Mic through the Amp before and I was told it sounded like a Remington Shaver lmao! :p
