I've been looking for a pair of closed back "lifestyle" headphones for when I want some isolation and don't want to use my IEMs.
First I tried the Audio Technica ATH-MSR7 which looked great but the sound was focused too much on the upper mids and highs for my liking, not to my taste at all, so back they went.
Next I tried the Sony MDR-1A which looked even better but were the exact opposite of the MSR7 with way too much woolly bass. Shame too because the mids were really nice and I quite liked the rolled off highs but back they went.
My third choice came today, the
Sony MDR-100AAP and I'm happy to say they tick all the right boxes and then some, specially for the money (just under a ton). I bought one of the used pairs from the rain forest, so a return really but they are literally like new, not a mark on them. I got the black version which is nicely understated, unlike the other colours.
So I plugged them into my Magni 2, checked for low gain and hit play on MusicBee and I thought holy ****, bass monsters but then remembered I had switched the equaliser in while I was using my Havi B3 Pro 1s. Switched it off and started grinning, these things sound really good. Nice lush mids, smooth yet detailed highs and great bass extension without being too mental and the bass stays where it's supposed to be, no great mid bass hump like the 1As. I'm impressed with the sound stage too considering they are closed back, easily as wide as my HD650s though not as high or deep (front to back).
.... Back to listening to Guthrie Govan go mental on Steven Wilson's "Home Invasion / Regret #9"
