What is a good salary in UK at present?

Got a mate who's single without kids living in Central Scotland on about 45K, he's minted. Multiple holidays a year, lives in a wee studio flat near the centre of the city and doesn't even need a car, just rents one if he decides to do a trip.

How you use your money, especially in your 20s is key. He has no mortgage as he paid it off in his 30s. Clever guy - which I'd done that :)
I’ve got a buddy that’s similar. Single, very smart, doing a pretty trivial job by his standards for good money. 6 mile commute 4 days a week. Does what he wants, when he wants with decent cash reserves. Lots of free time and plenty of cash to enjoy it. Nice house paid for by 30~

Im seeing a pattern here. Single, no kids. That's the key to financial success! :D

Truth! :D

With a partner you get those two tax free amounts. And only need a small-medium house with no kids.

With no partner and no kids you certainly can live in a small house and do exactly what you want.

Somewhere between those two is sweet spot depends on partner! :D

Saying that.. Currently talking with gf about emigrating. And gf may block that. So yeah. Single is probably best! :D

Yep.

For me, single, no kids. Paid off my mortgage in April (I'm now 39). I have been flying out to different countries for holidays since. This time next week, I be relaxing on the beach in Malta :)

As Freefaller said. That's the reason I bust my arse to have a better life.

And when all your baby boomer parents all snuff it, you will be able to sell their baby boomer generation houses off and be mortgage free anyway. :)

For me, no money would be worth it in the UK as even though London has a lot going on.....I just don't like the aggressive people and (lack of) culture.

For me a good salary is one where you can buy everything you want without thinking about it, saving a large amount a month and having at least one house paid off.

So for London as single person I'm presuming 150k as the tax is insane and property price high. Even then are you really getting ahead or just more comfortable than most?

Up north I'd just kill myself. Grey, miserable weather, surrounded by miserable unhealthy people. Wouldn't do it for a million a year.
if you really judge people like that then i am sure no one up north will miss you :D

FWIW parts of the north are stunning. i had to move down to cambridge due to my fairly specialised career but i miss cheshire and surrounding areas.

i do sometimes look back and wonder what i did with all my spare time (and spare cash)

the cash is easy...i used to put every penny into my mortgage but the time........................................ i had so much of that and didnt even know it.

I do laugh when i see people saying they earn north of 50k but still dont think its a decent salary.

I remember my mum making me hide with her behind the sofa when the coal man came as she literally had no money to pay, we cut down trees for the local farmer. Dad didnt get paid but he was allowed the wood to take to burn and got access to his land to shoot on so we had meat for sunday lunch............ also used to dig for spuds etc the farm machinery missed for extra veg.

as a kid i was young and didnt know any different. my folks hid from me how close to circling the drain they were so i was plenty happy but it must have been a miserable life for them for a few years......

There are definitely people skint like that today as well of course............ but doubtful the people on here lamenting that 100k isnt a big salary (even in london)

Sounds realistic

In the end won't religious people in developed countries just outbreed everyone else?
well yes . they do have a good family system kids are looked after parents work .. lol my mum and dad looked after mine twice in 17 yrs ..

£150k a year minimum, at least 6'2 and 8 inches is a requirement I tend to see on Tinder. Who knows.
I do laugh at the delusion of those only fans ‘type’ girls who seem to crop up on YouTube, Facebook etc.

“Any man would need to earn 200k to get my attention” whilst glueing on some even bigger eyelashes and nails.

Erm no. Your likely reality is a person who tells you he earns 200k and has a Gucci belt. Very different.

Must admit I’m fascinated by this thread… trying to figure out what everyone earns :o :p

Best post yet :D

Around where I live the cost of rent or mortgage, monthly expenses on a moderate lifestyle, able to take at least one decent holiday a year, have enough aside to cover eventualities and/or rises in costs and generally not worry that much about your finances would be 25K minimum more like 30K or double that for a family. Probably more like 36K if you want to eat out regularly, take foreign holidays yearly, etc.

Fine if they want to do it for themselves or whatever but I've always been bemused by the ever longer claws - I don't know of a guy ever who finds that attractive.
