what is considered a good cpu temp during 30 minutes to an hour of gaming?

These last few days ive been using my computer more than i have done since i built it months ago and the use has been for gaming compared to previous usage being setting it up and doing some video editing at which point i never needed to take any notice of temps nor was the fan being loud and kicking in at high speed a lot.(i assume its that and not my rx 570 which tends to run slightly cooler)

Its the 5900x with an ID cooling single fan tower cooler. according to Msi Afterburner the temps for the cpu have been mid 70s to mind 80s with the power usage going up to around 125w.

Being a 12 core processor, the utilization tends to range from 6% to 60% most the time i think without double checking.

I know every processor varies and the 5900x is a high end chip, but im only playing games long enough to record some decent footage, so within that hour im playing multiple games pushing them the best i can for the hardware.

The noise alone is making me want to change to an AIO, but i can only fit 120mm versions which i dont know will make that much of a difference with that i have described.

thats fine, your cpu will run all day at 80c

if you feel its hot... its not but if you do a PA120 will do a better job
My basket at OcUK:

Total: £29.99 (includes delivery: £0.00)

120 aio would be pointless, why is that all you can fit?

you could get a bigger+better air cooler, but I don't know if there are space issues.

getting hot under heavy load isn't necessarily a problem tho, but nothing wrong with an upgrade for something quieter.

ok thanks. i know people like to get as cool as they can, i just wasnt sure on a good temp with how often the fan ramps up at times and it does create a lot of heat out the back of the case like an xbox series s which i know tends to be normal, though my case has a glass window and only 2 case fan options.

I use a M-atx portable case that only has 2 useful case fan positions and a glass window. it does have mesh on the top, but only extra fans can be mounted at the bottom which would require no gpu or hard drives fitted which is obviously pointless.

I purposely chose the case for what i wanted and fits perfectly on my desk shelf, so i wont be changing the case. This is my first proper use of the system and first time using more than a 6 core chip on a desktop, so i needed to get a rough idea if i might need a new cooler. the rx 570 i got used and those fans tend to be reasonably noisy, so im not sure which is the more noisier, but cpu + case fans are silent outside of gaming, so im not sure if you can actually get quieter coolers while running higher temps?

there's no silver bullet, sounds like your options are:
- try the peerless assassin if it fits
- do nothing / live with it
- a lower tdp cpu (not worth bothering imo, may as well change case)

Ambient temperature also matters
Few hours of gaming today
And my 5950x is just hitting 40c
Got it near an open window and it's pulling air in
From outside where it's 7c

As others said basically any big cooler
From thermalright is pretty cheap and very effective
If it will fit in your pc case
90c is about the limit for a 5900x
So you might be pushing it once summer gets here

There are a few options you could do to help and not negatively impact performance. Don't forget Tjmax is 90ºc for this CPU, so 70-80ºc is within limits. Also worth noting that AMD do recommend liquid cooling for optimal results. However, with that said, you could try and tame things slightly by:

1. Running curve optimiser in Ryzen Master and then lock the value in your BIOS (if you haven't done so already).
2. You could also set the PPT, TDC and EDC values slightly lower in the BIOS to optimise efficiency vs power (especially as you are air cooling). So stock = PPT: 142, TDC: 90, EDC: 140. Try PPT: 125, TDC: 85, EDC: 120. Just as an example. Do a before and after with cinebench as a quick test and monitor the temps.

For my 5800x I ran PPT: 125, TDC: 80, EDC: 120. Along with a small negative curve value and it dropped my temps with cinebench from 80ºc to like high 60s. And that was on air cooling at the time.

With my 9700x, I just have it set to run at 75ºC max. I don't have the fans on my rad running more than 60%.

I'm currently running a 5900x (upgraded from a 3800X) and a corsair h80i v2 AIO cooler, and my CPU package temps while gaming can easily get to 70-75C, so I doubt going for a 120mm AIO is going to make much difference. I'd be very interested in the results if you do go for a PA120. Although I'm too lazy to take the MB out of this old case to replace the cooler baseplate, so actually it will just be interest value on the modern air cooler :)

My AIO fans spin up to nearly top speed even on a quiet or balanced profile after about an hours gaming, and it was pretty loud. I've recently replaced the old corsair AIO fans plus a v old Antec Tri-Cool case fan (remember them!) with Artic P12 PWM fans, they still spin up to max but its much quieter than it used to be. Maybe 2-3C cooler too, but not much.

I need to move this PC from under the desk where the hot air just recirculates to a better position really. But that can wait till summer adds 10C onto the temps :)
