What is with the attitude of builders?

some interesting stereotyping going on here fellas.
i work in construction ( carpenter by trade), site manager now.
interesting because when watching the news or reading the papers ( yes we sometimes get off page 3 even tho a lot are reading page 2 in the sun) it's always the thick builders who are pinching this, breaking into that and generally being the only ones making a nuisance of themselves.

Get over yourselves eh.
there are bad apples in every walk of life and construction is no different.
you probably are ****** off cos you went to all the trouble of going to uni, getting a degree in nonsense and only earning 25k (estimate) when tradesmen earn double that and more for a job that is dirty, hard and dangerous. how many office workers are killed or seriously hurt every year.
if you want to generalize at least get your facts right.

Get over yourselves eh.

Pardon? I've got nothing to get over mate, I'm an honest guy doing an honest job. which.....

... yes I've got a degree to get into (in a respectable, worthwhile subject may I add)....but I don't pride myself on my wage and , which you and 'your lot' appear to judging by your comments. I know a "tradesman" who says similar things to you, he says things like : "oh well you've got your fancy degree, but you only earn half what I do". Interesting comment, I certainly wouldnt ever say something like that to someone who earns - say, minimum wage. I just don't feel the need to brag about my wage. Also I dont think its a great positive to my job that I'm not 'likely to be killed'. I don't know what your point is there.

Can I ask you a question Jobe - do you leer and shout at women who've not provoked you at dinner time?

don't whistle, stare or anything else no.
i look of course and if i get the double look i'll even smile and say hello.
some do some don't.
are you saying it's only builders who do this.

Pardon? I've got nothing to get over mate, I'm an honest guy doing an honest job. which.....

as in all builders arn't honest. granted some are rip off merchants but again that's the same for any serviceyou get anywhere in the world.

we don't judge ourselves by it but it's the sole reason you go to work. how many lottery winners do you see still working 8-9 hours a day in a grinding job. ( don't tell me you go to work for any other reason cos they are just 'other' reasons, not the main one.

Interesting comment, I certainly wouldnt ever say something like that to someone who earns - say, minimum wage.

maybe you wouldn't but here you are slagging builders off for all buying a sausage roll. why. wtf do you care. what if some of those guys were of lower intelligence (and consequently earning around minimum wage) and construction was one of the few jobs they could do? would you still complain if you knew it to be sure?

The Uni at Manchester is having a lot of building work done and the builders use our canteen facilities. Some of the comments they say to and behind female students backs is beyond disturbing. I'd start a fight if I wasn't out numbered 30 to 1.

I wasn't slagging off builders for buying a sausage roll, I was slagging the ones I saw yesterday off for their disgusting, lewd behaviour, and wondered why quite a few builders I've come across are like that.

As for your second point above, you make the best point in all of your posts in this thread and I certainly wouldn't complain about people being in construction for that reason. however I hope you dont think I have a problem with every single builder, I don't, just the attitudes of certain ones, but I hate the sheep mentality in a bad bunch.

Evidently, you do have something to get over, if you hadn't, would you really feel obligated to create threads that will almost certainly cause a negative reaction amongst others? Why not keep your trivial qualms to yourself?

lol - ok i'll stop using a public forum for asking a question of others

it's not about not saying it or asking the question.
i like debate as much as the next man although i don't always go about it
the correct way.

so don't stop posing controversial questions but do expect people to stick up for themselves.

unfortunately construction is male dominatedand the 'pack' mentality can get out of hand.
they should be reported. they will be disciplined and sent packing if found guilty.

I've noticed that builders/construction workers behave badly in the day time when they're working or on their breaks. I have contact with them when I’m on my lunch break and I go to the shop.

I’ve come across a few examples of these people being rude, but I’ve only felt the need to speak to someone about it after my lunch just, when I saw a big van with 3 burly blokes in the front stuffing their faces with food and what looked like 3 toddlers in the back (aged about 4-5 at a glance, I could be wrong). The front 3 builders in the van were shouting at the top of their voices to a young girl reversing out of her parking spot all sorts of lewd, vile comments.

What is their problem? Why do they behave like this?

Do you think this is a recent development or something?

I see the same sort of mentality among bankers and auditors sometimes (though obviously not when they're in the office)... it's definately not behaviour restricted to builders.

you only have to be out on a saturday night to hear the same old ****.
it's always gone on and always will.
not saying i agree with everything said but hey, what ya gonna do ( shrugs shoulders)

ps don't think women can't handle themselves in situations like this.
they can be equally vicious.

My mum's boyfriend is a builder (doorman at the weekend ) and he's one of the nicest blokes i've met. Even though he's huge he's a really nice person not some thug.
He's helped out my family and he's like a dad, payed loads for a year gym membership, pays for the shopping all the time, fixed up the house a load.

(Y) Stereotypes suck :p I'm sure most builders just do their job... You get idiots in every part of life :p

You know them type of people with no education or social understanding that could not get employment?

Well once building demand increased unfortunatly did the unemployment rate for these type of people.

so you're saying all the thick people work in construction.
tell me when you talk about builders what catagory do you mean.
general builders, carpenters, electricians, plumbers.
others?

and what would you prefer them to do. stay on benefits? be put down

I work in construction. I don't like the stereotype being thrown around in here :(

Not all builders are **** holes. I would say only a small percentage are like the ones you describe. Most builders are good guys.

So rather go get a job and do something with themselves they should have stayed home and claimed dole? :/

Pretty much how it is.

I think the thread fails to understand that it's people who are like this, a product of upbringing not job role.

not sure i agree with this entirely.
don't think it's exclusively down to upbringing.
i think it's the person themselves who determine how they turn out.
there's too many instances of good upbringing turning out bad apples and
vice versa.
external infuences certainly have an impact but it is the person and the person alone who makes their decisions.
