some interesting stereotyping going on here fellas.
i work in construction ( carpenter by trade), site manager now.
interesting because when watching the news or reading the papers ( yes we sometimes get off page 3 even tho a lot are reading page 2 in the sun) it's always the thick builders who are pinching this, breaking into that and generally being the only ones making a nuisance of themselves.

there are bad apples in every walk of life and construction is no different.
you probably are ****** off cos you went to all the trouble of going to uni, getting a degree in nonsense and only earning 25k (estimate) when tradesmen earn double that and more for a job that is dirty, hard and dangerous. how many office workers are killed or seriously hurt every year.
if you want to generalize at least get your facts right.

... yes I've got a degree to get into (in a respectable, worthwhile subject may I add)....but I don't pride myself on my wage and , which you and 'your lot' appear to judging by your comments. I know a "tradesman" who says similar things to you, he says things like : "oh well you've got your fancy degree, but you only earn half what I do". Interesting comment, I certainly wouldnt ever say something like that to someone who earns - say, minimum wage. I just don't feel the need to brag about my wage. Also I dont think its a great positive to my job that I'm not 'likely to be killed'. I don't know what your point is there.

The Uni at Manchester is having a lot of building work done and the builders use our canteen facilities. Some of the comments they say to and behind female students backs is beyond disturbing. I'd start a fight if I wasn't out numbered 30 to 1.
I wasn't slagging off builders for buying a sausage roll, I was slagging the ones I saw yesterday off for their disgusting, lewd behaviour, and wondered why quite a few builders I've come across are like that.
As for your second point above, you make the best point in all of your posts in this thread and I certainly wouldn't complain about people being in construction for that reason. however I hope you dont think I have a problem with every single builder, I don't, just the attitudes of certain ones, but I hate the sheep mentality in a bad bunch.

it's not about not saying it or asking the question.
i like debate as much as the next man although i don't always go about it
the correct way.
so don't stop posing controversial questions but do expect people to stick up for themselves.
unfortunately construction is male dominatedand the 'pack' mentality can get out of hand.
they should be reported. they will be disciplined and sent packing if found guilty.

I see the same sort of mentality among bankers and auditors sometimes (though obviously not when they're in the office)... it's definately not behaviour restricted to builders.

LOL i wouldnt expect builders in the UK to behave like the ones here , damn looks like taxi drivers and builders are an international race
My mum's boyfriend is a builder (doorman at the weekend ) and he's one of the nicest blokes i've met. Even though he's huge he's a really nice person not some thug.
He's helped out my family and he's like a dad, payed loads for a year gym membership, pays for the shopping all the time, fixed up the house a load.

But the average age of a builder is around 50 and chavs had never been heard of when they started.

Not all builders are **** holes. I would say only a small percentage are like the ones you describe. Most builders are good guys.
Pretty much how it is.
I think the thread fails to understand that it's people who are like this, a product of upbringing not job role.
not sure i agree with this entirely.
don't think it's exclusively down to upbringing.
i think it's the person themselves who determine how they turn out.
there's too many instances of good upbringing turning out bad apples and
vice versa.
external infuences certainly have an impact but it is the person and the person alone who makes their decisions.
