What is 'woke' and why do we use it?

Dunno but conservatives in the US and over here (to a slightly lesser extent) seem to be pinning their election chances on selling it as the worst thing to ever happen to humanity. It will be interesting to see what happens come election time, particularly in the US where it's so tribal at the moment. My gut feeling is that the average swing voter doesn't care about it enough to have it be a major factor in how they vote. Maybe it will have a positive effect on conservative turnout?

It's not just the US that's tribal; try showing any kind of support for the PM (or for the opposition leader) on any form of social media, or even this forum, and watch the mob(s) attack. Everyone is assumed to be apart of a group and on a side, rather than simply being allowed to observe and comment.

Labels thrown about willy-nilly, encompassing and tarring all without allowing for discussion or consideration of context.

The cause is most likely the same as that which defines the acceptable nature of modern woke agendas; the media, only exacerbated by its integration into short-form social clickbait media, and by the ever increasing narcissistic "my opinion is gospal" populace.

Keep 'em dumb, keep 'em divided, keep 'em manipulated.

Isn't it something to do with eating smashed avocado on toast, buying a new iPhone every month and not freaking out when someone asks to be addressed using a particular pronoun?

The term "woke" is a slang term that originated in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) "slang" and has gained mainstream popularity in recent years. It refers to being socially and politically aware of various issues, such as racism, social justice, and inequality, and actively advocating for change.

The term has evolved to encompass a broad range of topics, including gender and sexuality, environmentalism, and other forms of social activism. It is often used to describe individuals who are committed to progressive social causes and who actively seek to challenge systemic oppression and promote social justice.

The use of the term "woke" has been a way for people to signal their support for these issues and to identify with a larger movement for social change.
It is often used as a form of shorthand to describe individuals who are socially and politically engaged and who are actively working to make a positive difference in the world.
working to make a positive difference in the world but not for certain groups.

First time i heard the term was probably a decade or so ago when people would refer to rappers such as Immortal Technique as 'woke' because instead of rapping about hoes and what not they rapped about politics etc. It had no negative connotations back then.

It won't power/heat my house.
It won't put food on the table
It won't make my mortgage cheaper
It won't prevent climate change

So if any politician prefers to bang on about how much harm woke/wokeness is supposedly causing, rather than real issues, I won't be giving them the time of day.

The woke aspect is part of the ideology, on the one side you have the climate people who increase the costs of the things you say, on the other side you have the woke aspect, doing the same.

It's the modern version of 'politically correct'.

America is far more segregated than most countries so it's easy for them to become tribal.

You do realise that to the 'woke' none of those things are important - they would rather you starve than use the wrong pronoun.

It’s the core belief system of US identity politics where everything nominally Christian, heterosexual, Caucasian and politically conservative is the cause of all the world’s evils and must be erased.
