What is your minimum FPS acceptence level?

Depends on the game. Some games like CoD4 really need to run at 60 FPS, when you see it at 30 FPS it just doesnt look right at all (Quantum of Solace for example). Crysis is pretty good in that it looks really smooth at 30 FPS, at 60 its gob smacking.

All round though i prefer 60 FPS, games simply look and play great that way. I dont understand this whole you cant see over 30 fps thing, because its night and day seing a 30 FPS game vs 60. I dunno.........

erm... i think this might be a noob question but surely any more than 60 is pointless (assuming you have a 60hz monitor, which i would have thought is still the norm)

for me 50 is the min for most of the games i play. I get 60ish on almost all tho

Fast paced games, needs to be highest i can get like 40-50+. Slow paced games as long as its not terribly laggy i dont mind as much. For example i cant stand tdu under 30 at all. For games like adventure games they could be 20 and i wouldnt mind. For fps id always want them 40+ or more.

You're saying that if I sat you infront of two monitors you could see which one was 50 FPS and which one was 60 FPS ?
I know I probably could, some people notice the difference in framerate a lot more than others. I have a friend who can notice small differences all the way into the hundreds. Kinda freaky.

A 10 fps difference is a little tough to spot, and I'm not sure if it's an entirely visual thing. But certainly in my Quake 3 heyday, I could 'feel' the difference between 30, 60 and 90 fps.

I like using V-sync wherever possible, but as said many times already, it depends entirely on the game. 20-30 fps on a Total War game for example, is totally fine to me.

25fps for games that are slow paced or have decent motion blur (e.g. Crysis, GRID, Stalker)

Over 60fps for games like BF2 and Source engine games.

BTW, has anyone noticed how awesome Crysis plays when the fps is at over 60fps? Looks way smoother than any other game at 60fps.

Yeah ive seen it in parts, its simply jaw dropping. The day Crysis can be played maxed out at a super high resolution with 60+ FPS constantly will be the day i beleive in god :).

50-60 is easy to spot.
90-100 is not.

DOA3 on my xbox you could run it at 50 or 60-FPS if you set the TV for 50 or 60Hz.

I was messing with the settings one day & set the Xbox to 50Hz=50fps,the next day i played DOA3 i noticed it was not as smooth for some reason & forgot that i had changed the it to 50fps, i put it back to 60fps & noticed it being smoother again instantly.

There are reasons why framerates higher than monitor refresh can be useful, e.g:

-In some games e.g. Quake3 engine, physics is dependent on framerate
-I find integer multiples of refresh rate feel a little smoother, e.g. constant 150fps with 75hz refresh is a little smoother (probably something to do with mouse input)
-The placebo effect, i.e. it makes people feel more confident seeing their FPS counter in triple digits.

As for my preferences, it depends on the type of game:

Quakeworld: 77 (but I can notice the difference with much higher e.g. 154fps)
SP FPS: ~50
Action (e.g. space sims): ~45
Driving: ~40
RTS: ~30
TBS or anything else really slow paced: ~20

I've only ever tested myself with source games and as long as the game is running at 35 fps without variance I don't notice it. I'm kinda glad in a way, more friendly on the pocket ;).

FPS games if it's usually over about 40ish and only rarely dips below 25ish then its alright. Supcom I can play quite happily at about 25fps though lol. I find it difficult to believe anyone can spot the difference between 100fps and 120fps... its difficult to notice the difference between lower fps unless if they are side by side anyway
