I'm on the verge of selling my PC, but before I do I was wondering if its worth having a go at some games in dx10.

Any users of it feel its worth installing the dreaded Vista for it?

Vista's not so bad these days. I've seen it running on a friend's PC with a very similar spec to mine and it's come a long way (baby). I'm even considering "side-grading" to it in the near future :S

DX10 on it's own is not really worth an install of Vista, Vista's GUI and inner workings do bring improvements of their own, which, combined with DX10, would make it worthy of an install.
There really isn't that much going on with DX10 atm, though some new PC games do support it, the actual graphical differences are minor and normally can be achieved through editing game files (see Crysis for a prime example).
There is strong rumour atm that DX11 is not that far away, which may explain the low number of DX10 games.

My opinion is that we have not yet really seen what Dx10 is capable of, and to be honest I dont think we will for a while yet. It took a long time before we really saw what could be done with DX 8 and 9 , and I dont think 10 will be any different.

(Also my opinion on Vista is that its not quite the big bad demon that many would have people believe, I've been using it at work and home for a long long time now and not had any problems with it. I do however suggest quite a bit of Ram for it)

Vista is awesome, DX10, not quite so. It's supposed to be faster more efficient than DX9 at the very same things, but it's slow as all hell.

Vista has come on leaps and bounds, I have been running a dual system for about 12 months now and i hardly ever boot into XP anymore.
Direct X 10 on the other hand has not & that doesnt look like changing anytime soon.

Vista itself it quite good. But DX10 is a bit, crap, but i dont know if thats MS' fault or game developers. When CoH put the DX10 patch in, anyone who could use DX10 got defaulted to it and ended up getting an uglier game which ran like poop (thankfully you can put it back into DX9 but still............). Some games have DX10 features, but i dont see anything different (BioShock for example). Dx10.1 sounds nice as i think i read that if a games run in it, by default it will have 2xAA ? Anyway, imo, DX10 has been a complete disappointment, its brought nothing to gamers but hassle.

Edit - Oh also, i think its awful how MS tried to show how DX10 was better by comparing models in Crysis to Halo 1 models.

if what Billy G says is true (the next Windows will be released in 2009) then i will be sticking with XP untill then. Never been a fan of, or impressed with Vista or DX10. I personally hope DX dies rather than continues.
In my eyes, Vista has been a flop, when compared with the likes of Windows 98 and Windows XP when they were released.

Agreed. I'm still on XP and wont be moving from it anytime soon. I use the PC primarily for gaming. Until Vista offers SUPERIOR performance, I dont see the point in changing.

Makes me wonder if the time has come to finally chuck Windows XP into the recycle bin, the only person who uses it is my dad and he only uses it for aol so he can use vista now, dont see the point in XP.

ive installed vista a number of times just hoping it would be close to xp in performance but it isnt....just 2 days ago was the last time as there was lots of hype about service pack 1 bringing a massive performance boost.
well i installed vista and ran a timedemo of an online game where there were lots of players running/shooting...a nice good test for the cpu.

xp 330-360fps depending on drivers
vista 185 using latest drivers

it wasnt even close.......maybe vista fairs better in sp games where cpu power isnt needed as much and its more about gpu power.

as for dx10...what does that even do other than cripple performance even further ?

When I last tried Crysis benchmark in DX10 it was only a few fps slower than DX9, and it Vista seems on par with XP here now.

Why would you be bothered about 185fps in Vista compared to 330 in XP? 185fps is perfectly playable.

Vista has been universally welcomed, and far more popular at release than 98 or XP ever was. Vista makes XP look like Windows ME.

your totally right, i have had vista x64 for quite a long time now, it was quite good originally, but crysis used to be so stuttery in DX10, but with the patches for crysis and constant updating from microsoft DX10 performance is gradually getting better. and thats the thing that annoys the balls of me, people complainaing about how NVIDIA have screwed with DX10.1? thats what i HATE about the computer industry, there killing off DX10 before it ever reaches actual maturity, it still has lots to offer i feel and there gonna render it outdated, they need to quit already with chucking out rubbish and just concentrate on what they've got with DX10, just my opinion
