What language would you learn?

Italian is just SUCH a beautiful language - whenever I'm in Italy I just get weak at the knees hearing the people talk. Most of the time it's in a marina or a shipyard and it sounds like they are having a huge a fight all the time :p but it's just fabulous to listen to.

Nail, head.

I think a lot of people still need to speak English properly as well.

Japanese, because the culture seems quite nice, but more importantly I could import Japanese games and be able to understand what was going on.

Italian for me also. Such a beautifull and passionate language. whenever I have been there I have always learned the basics to get around, order food etc. The Italians always seem to appreciate the effort when you attept their language.

Edit. Has anyone tried Rosetta Stone language schools. I've heard that it is one of the best ways to learn a new language. Never actually tried it though

English (I'm a Geordie)

Seriously though Chinese / Mandarin would be handy so I could watch my Shaw Brothers DVD's without the subtitles on. :D

Slightly OT, but which is the most common langauge in Europe (not including English)?

The distribution of first languages

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Europa-Lingvoj--RS2006030842.jpg

According to this page it's German

http://www.unlv.edu/Foreign_Lang/LANGUAGES/german.htm

· The most important trans-atlantic business language (after English)

· The native language of over 100 million Europeans

· The most common language spoken or learned in Europe (after English)

· The second most-used language on the Internet (ahead of Spanish, Chinese, French...)

· The key to graduate study in the natural sciences, humanities, business, law and medicine.

Which would make sense. You also have to remember that English is a massive language with other languages mixed in, which is why it is probably so popular.

I use to go to France nearly every summer, so I picked up quite a lot of French from mingling with local kids. When I got to secondary school I was put in a German class, though, and I wasn’t allowed to change. I think if I’d have done French at school I’d still be pretty good at it today, alas, I only really know very little French and German. I might get my act togeather one day and learn French properly.

A girl I went out with in School did French and was always interested in language, she had a list of languages she wanted to learn. The last I heard she can now speak French, German, Spanish and Russian very well and works for the MOD as an interpreter.

Im with FF on the italian front, fell in love with the language when i went to Rome a few yrs ago and also met a very nice italian blonde bombshell who just happens to be a very good friend of mine...no not like that you filthy buggers although before i got hitched i did have my naughty way with her. She moved from Milan to London and i see her a few times a week and i always insist on her speaking italian with me so that i can learn from her while i teach her a bit of punjabi...its a right laugh though because firstly i cant speak any italian expect ciao bella and she cant speak punjabi unless its a swear word :p. But its a great laugh though, her speaking english is very cute tho

Italian and Arabic, I can understand some Italian but Arabic looks Chinese to me, I would most probably suck at it too! I would stay for another year in Italy, that place rocks, you have really nice pizza and ice cream and you can also make fun of the way Italians dress, like what more could you want from a country?

I would like to learn Dutch...a lot of the countries languages around there are similar so they half understand each other and many African languages are also similar to Dutch.

I don't think I ever will...don't really have the patience to pickup a new language.

I'm the same, I can sort of get by listening to Italian (thanks to my French and Spanish). I do love Italy too - but then again like you, the Mediterranean is my kinda place ;)

My Arabic used to be at least GCSE standard probably a bit more - unfortunately I've let it slide - it's a fascinating language wrapped up in one of the most interesting cultures the world has to offer. Hearing my lebanese friends talk it's so soft and gentle, almost like singing. Dammit I need to move back to the middle east :( (well I would if the west would stop interfering :p)

ti kanis Apostolis? Kalla?

Finnish, absolutely love the language, it sounds so beautiful. I know very select phrases, but it's very difficult to learn. My second choice would probably be Italian. Again, another beautiful language, and one country i've regretted not visiting yet, the culture just seems fantastic :)

Well if you know French (or Spanish and even Romanian) it's pretty easy to pick up the language, I just love the way it sounds! What puts me off in Arabic is the writting, I mean it's impossible for me to distinguish different letters, it looks like an artist drawing in loops for me :o

Mia xara file mou, pos pernas sti Germania? :D
