What Linux Operating Systems do you like?

I think I've finally fixed my Firefox 4K YouTube issue, disabling AV1 so it reverts to VP9 codec seems to have sorted it out, I've watched a few vids (even some 20+ minutes) and it's been fine so touch wood that was the issue, I've read about latest Linux firmware having some AV1 issues so might be related

I've also moved over to Kinoite, mainly just giving stuff a try see what I want longterm, I very much enjoyed my time on Fedora and since I was really only using mangohud + steam as native packages I figured might as well give a atomic distro + full flatpak apps a try, other than needed a quick command to get ntsync loading at boot everything as been plug and play

@Mercurial , i've still yet to try Pikaos, I see that some people dislike Cosmo and Ferreo being secretive to who they are and where they are from!

Though they seem to have a link with American developer GloriousEggroll from the Nobara project.

Ferrero is definitely UK based, seemingly London and is terminally online :) I've no problem with them wanting to maintain their privacy, the Open Source community does like it's drama and vendettas. Ain't no-one got time for that.

Cosmo I know little about. But I know there is a Syrian connection somewhere which may go some way to explain their attitude towards their identities.

Pika also has links to the CachyOS team, so they are well connected with quite a few "players".

I asked AI why there is mistrust and it comes back to the wallpaper mascot! :D

The "Pika" Name Confusion: The animal that PikaOS is named after—the pika—is a small mountain mammal with its highest species diversity located in China. Some internet sleuthing regarding the name occasionally morphs into a false assumption that the software itself originates from China.

On a purely technical level, PikaOS is built on Debian Unstable. Deepin Chinese OS also builds parts of its ecosystem on Debian, and some of Deepin's open-source desktop software packages (like the deepin-terminal) are mirrored in Debian's broader repositories.

If a user is combing through the backend repository files of a Debian-based system like PikaOS and spots the word "deepin" attached to a terminal or a desktop tool, they sometimes panic and falsely assume that the Chinese OS has been secretly baked into their system.

I installed CachyOS and am dual booting for now

All good so far and very nippy

Not played any games yet and use an AMD setup with a 9070XT

Would say, Dying Light 2 work better on Linux?

I mean I could do some benchmarking and not be lazy but gaming time is of a premium these days!

What are you using as a game launcher, Steam or something else?

CachyOS has its own Proton and there are other forks available depending on what improvements or features you would like.

For GPU tweaking LACT is great.

I've been on CachyOS for a while now and am in a place where I havent had to boot windows at all!

Ah cool.

Pretty much all my stuff is on Steam.

Already from reading that, I figure I am going to have to do some research, watch some vids :)

I made the switch to CachyOS a couple of months back. I have two nvmes, windows on the other. I only ever switch to Windows to play Battlefield 6, I thought I'd need to switch OS much more than I do. Overall, I'm pleased I made the switch and I look forward to the day I no longer need to dual boot.

For the recent discussion. Game launcher wise, if it's not on Steam, I use faugus.

Haven't tried DL2 but most games work fine, there is outliers tho like new Phantom Blade 0 just being meh on Linux vs Windows

I've been using Pop OS 22.04 LTS for years now with no issues. Stable and fast which is perfect as my dev machine

Funnily enough i've been recently playing about with it again.

Their cosmic desktop still feels a bit beta and buggy but it's not far off being good enough as a daily driver, I really love their fonts and pixel hinting!

Yeah, The PopOS subreddit is full of people complaining about it so I'm trying to stay on 22.04 for as long as possible :D. Might give it a test on a VM but then i might get FOMO and upgrade :D

It’s a lovely desktop but the Cosmic apps are just not ready for primetime - file manager doesn't give an accurate display of copying progress nor check there is sufficient disk space on the target drive before proceeding. Hence I ditched Fedora Cosmic Atomic for Fedora Kinoite.

Thanks for that!

I only tried web browsing, command prompt and their new mediaplayer, I should have dug deeper.

The PopOS devs are writing the DE from the ground up so I wouldn't expect 100s of features people need any time soon. They've only been at it for around 5 years with a small team. GNOME 3 was released in 2011 and the final release was 2020. Then they switched to the 40+ versioning. And it wasn't until 40+ that things seemed to settle down, become stable (things not breaking with every point release) and features started to be added rather than removed (although there are still things that would be great if they added t that they refuse because reasons). If you want everything and the kitchen sink and the ability to completely customise your DE, KDE is the only way to go unless you go with tiling window managers.
