What "man jobs" have you done today?

Oh my, what a fire place that is!
Sledgehammer and crowbar at the ready :D If it had just been a fireplace I might have kept it but the side... plinths are just hideous. Would like to keep the gas fire which has a base plate screwed to the brick so need to get someone in to disconnect it and remove while I rip the brick off.

Made a small wallpaper mound.... :D That's the top layer off everywhere and part of the 2nd and 3rd layers off in most places. Came off quite easily so far so shouldn't be too bad when I get the Zinsser on the rest tomorrow. So much wallpaper though

Found a few patches that are pretty damp to the touch once the top layer of paper was off. I can see why though, the dark patterned wallpaper was so thick and heavy it's actually completely waterproof  Made a bowl shape out of a sheet and filled it up in the sink and the water didn't come through at all. So I think moisture must have been getting in the chimney (which the survey did pick up is in need of repointing) but then the air vent was blocked up and the walls were completely unable to breath. Not to mention there's no heating in there except the gas fire. It's already nearly dry on the surface just after an hour or 2 of being uncovered in a fairly cold room. Once I get some radiators installed it should be fine.

Painted my kitchen. I’ve literally never painted before this, and was going to get someone in to do it but thought I’d save myself the money and make myself less useless in the process. I’m delighted with how it turned out. Was just white before so looked very plain

Very sharp, hope you are proud of yourself, you have done a good job!

Now paint the numbers on the clock in the same red....

Thank you mate :)

There are a few tiny areas on a couple of sockets where I left the masking tape on too long so peeled a tiny bit of paint off, just part of learning I suppose, so will touch it up when it’s had a day to dry.

Yeah the clock needs some colour too now :D

Got dry rot behind skirting, need to rip out, replace and get some vents in dry it out. Think the problem was blocked downpipe outside-now unblocked. or that previous owners layed a concrete floor over subfloor and then laminate over that.

Ripped all the living room carpet and underlay up now. Underlay was pretty damp but the floorboards underneath are fine. Pretty sure the damp was just tracking across the underlay rather than coming from beneath it. Again, probably wouldn't be happening if there was some heating!

Plumber came out to quote for installing new radiators. Unfortunately one can't be lead off the rad in the hallway as the pipes aren't sufficient (apparently). So this means new ones have to be plumbed in from upstairs. Sounds like a much bigger job than I was expecting... Gonna have to put new pipes in under the floor in one bedroom and the box room (as in the one I've just decorated ) to get to the end walls and pipe down to the lounge. Grim. Waiting for the quote to come through but already informed the family not to expect Christmas presents this year :p

Also papered over wallpaper hooks is nothing. In the flat my parents just bought, some shelves had L shaped brackets to support them on the wall and they'd been plastered over!

I can beat that, when we moved into the house we are in now, the previous owner had super glued the carpet to the floor and used nails to hold up the wallpaper, it was a nightmare.

Haha this flat also had the carpet glued down.

Luckily it was old so the glue had turned to a weird powder but it made a right mess when pulling it up.

What is it with you and red atm? :P

Unscrew the socket face plates, pull away from the wall, and tape a sandwich bag around each of them, and paint behind them. Don't fart about trying to paint around them, you'll never get a proper finish. :)

Is your boiler upstairs, otherwise I would call bull. Rule of thumb is 3 rads per 15mm branch, but if you close enough to the 22mm pipes from the boiler a new branch can be added very easily.

Yeah, boiler is in a cupboard at the top of the stairs. He said it was 10mm to the hallway rad (I haven't measured), and I don't know if that's all the way from the upstairs 22 or not.

got ladders out and cleaned a load of spiders webs from front of security cameras - cleaned lenses as well - All nice and clear now.

Quick coat of paint over newly plastered ensuite and tried to finish the same in our new family room/dinning room.
Oh and then cleaned roller/tray which seemed to take almost as long as the painting!

I made a mallet from old milk bottles. Given it a bit of sand with wet and dry paper, but it didn't seem worth making to highly finished as it's used for bashing stuff with!

Thinking of going red in my kitchen. What shade and brand is that?

Fitted the worktops. Refused to pay 160 quid a corner for someone to use a router and jig so did it myself. It's pretty easy. Not perfect by an means, out a mill by the mitre and slight lip I can feel which I could get tight down but it's good enough.

The moron who installed our counter tops has left about a 1mm step both ends where counter tops meet, so don't think that paying some to do it always means a better job. (I didn't pay him by the way we live in a new build :( )
