What "man jobs" have you done today?

If the loft will become a study or some other habitable room, the work must meet the building regulations.

There is more to constructing a loft to a usable space, than just looking at a chart, & selecting 5x2 for a specific span, there is loading, structural stability,load-bearing walls, foundations, access, etc.

So, this weekend, I helped my dad:
  • Wall mounted my plasma
  • Installed 2 electric blinds to Velux windows in the roof of my living room
  • Installed 2 shelves in the utility room
  • Installed an outdoor electrical socket for my smoker
  • Put up a bike shed

Pretty pleased with all that!

Today I sorted the floorboards out in the small bedroom after taking out the old airing cupboard so we can get a proper bed in there, and varnished the new back door ready for hanging tomorrow :)

stripped a stone roof! Man were they heavy stones. The scary thing was that all of the roof timbers were rotten and crumbling away and they were only 3"x2" to begin with. Tonnes of weight resting on rotten timbers, right above a bath .

So stripped it all back and replaced the timbers with tanilised timber, then replacing the stone with slate.

I have spent the whole day and some of the the night staining my decking.

This is how it looked at 5pm today. I've now finished the last section, just a 2nd coat required on the banister.
Done using Ronseal Ultimate Decking Stain in Cedar

My freezer fell of its pathetic timber supports 3 x 1inch by 3 inch bits of wood stacked! Don't ask, previous folk being mental I think! Chucked it on a couple of 'skis' and slid it back into place. Needed to get my dad to give me a helping hand though. Painting the shed this afternoon.

Built my 8x6 metal billyoh shed last weekend. Very chuffed with it and wasn't too hard, just time consuming in this heat too. Dad had to take a trip to a&e after slicing his hand open

Shifted gravel from one side of the garden to the other in preparation for a raised bed going in next week. Hot work today though. Planted out some leeks and sowed some radishes.

Swapped from a crappy tap-shower thing to a proper thermostatic electric shower, including plumbing and mains wiring. Took most of the day but I now have hot water at the push of the button instead of faffing about with the taps and costing lots of money in oil heating a tank of water.

Chuffing hot pulling wires and pipes through the roof space tho!

All that work for a measly mean electric shower when you had a perfect opportunity to pump the tanks for a nice gushy shower :p. It's not like electric showers are that cheap either tbh, at 10kW.

Unblocked the kitchen sink, about 10 years worth of fat, oil & other **** down there.
Had to remove all the piping from the sink to the main drain, which meant removing half the kitchen !!

Also, changed all the door handles on the upstairs doors.

That is why it's worthwhile adding a T junction in a pipe run fitted with a access cap, you then have a rodding point, if you get a blockage.:)
