What "man jobs" have you done today?

Do you lose much signal with these?

Not really noticeable TBH and this and the 6 way is one I have fitted many times with no negative feedback as yet.

I do prefer using the 'F' connector type and fit in an easy to reach location where possible, in this jobs case, on a fused spur on the wall in the loft.

Brand wise I've not had an problems with Slx.

Ah dammit....

I went to test the pressure of the expansion vessel for my central heating system and water came out instead of air . In fact the water won't stop coming out of the schrader valve at the top, the vessel is definitely shot. A not so quick trip to the not so local plumber merchants and I picked up a new one and I'll fit it after lunch. May do some other jobs since I'll have the system part drained and depressurised.

Imagine the old days where that would have all been dug by hand!

Yes it's thick clay so would have been back breaking without the digger.

What did it look like before and what is the plan? I Have a garden that drops steeply by about 3 foot at the bottom of the garden. Would love to level it out as its such a wasted space at the moment mainly filled with horrible leylandii

Here's how it looked before:

We never knew what to do with it due to the slope plus it was dangerous so the garden was never used. We've spent a lot on the rest of the house so the garden was a real issue.

The original plan was a retaining wall going across the garden which would have been at least 2 and a half ft high. We changed it last week and paid extra to have everything removed so it was the same level. They are going to create a retaining wall with a planter going around the garden. We'll then have a lot more lawn to patio than we would have with the first plan.

Here is how it looks today after the footings have been dug. The concrete is coming tomorrow.

OMG that's a lot of soil

Any estimates on how much they removed?

I think it came in at 8 or 9 grab lorries in total, I lost count as they couldn't get them to come fast enough after we changed the plans. At least it's flat now.

At ground level it's like you are sunken in to a bowl. I'm 6ft 2ins and my head comes to less than half way up the fence at the far end :D

Tbh your before pics look flat. I'm assuming in this last puc, that mud is level, i see what you mean about that depth though, I'd be worried about the fence falling in, you going to secure it?

Removed the old busted expansion vessel, that dirty water was sitting inside that tank presumably from the deteriorated rubber inside.

Nice new one fitted and up to pressure.

While I had the system drained I thought I'd fit the magnetic filter that I bought a while ago.

Fitted fine but I'm not happy with where I fitted it. I was severely restricted as to where it could go due to the pipes out of the boilers being 28mm and the lack of vertical 22mm pipe runs that were accessible. A different style of magnetic filter may have been better. To make it ideal I'll have to remove some soldered joints and redo some pipework. Ignore the floating wiring centre :) that's another project.

We've finished decorating the dining room and I put up a pole for the new curtains. It's a double door so we bought an long, extendable pole. I should really have cut it down to size so that the join is in the centre rather than to one side, but it took so long to get everything lined up I didn't bother.

Now the curtains catch every time I open them as a constant reminder of my laziness :)

Carrying on with installing the superquilt (SF6) today - aiming to get it all stapled and taped in place. I started boarding out the loft last month slowly, used the T&G OSB loft panels from Wickes and went up to the outside edge of the purlins and put stud walls up to the purlins from there. Put a stud wall against the firebreak as well. Had a builder over to install two sky lights a couple of weeks back.
Next will be 25mm batten and plasterboard then I can start moving all my stuff up there and get the nursery painted.

@Adam I had similar done in my last house, it was totally worth albeit really, really expensive! I'm tempted to have similar done in our new place but the starting place for the garden here is much better.

Whats your overall plan for the loft @alexakasloth

Presumably you aren't going to remove the previous supports for those purlins and support off the studwork?

The supports will be staying put as I don't need to move them for what i'm using the space for, I spoke to the builder who installed the windows who said I would require steel or doubled up 2x9" set on pad stones which would be an unnecessary expense at this stage. If in the future we decide to do a habitable conversion we would get this done.
I'm getting some batten this afternoon to go across to then screw plasterboard into. After that run a spur up there for a bit of power and lighting, and move what I need up there. 12m2 of decent storage space and has cost less than £1.5k.

OSB3 loft boards - £289
CLS - £125
Metalwork - £20
2 x windows inc labour - £550
Superfoil - £280 (Aldi had this on offer for £70 a roll).
Foil tape - £14
25x38mm batten - £70-90
Plasterboard - £100.

[edit] will need to put a balustrade in as well, I've already slipped down the hatch and cut my neck open!

Ah OK that seems good price wise! I guess you're not planning to use year round and presume the foil is just to stop dust etc getting through the roof or have you put celotex in it and left an air gap?

I made a banister for mine just out of CLS timber. Mines just storage area though.

It's for some heat retention/ deflection, supposed to be the equivalent of 50mm PIR (we'll see...). I would have liked to put celotex up there, but both funds and time are limited right now with a baby on the way.

I'll be up there most weeks but just for a couple of hours at a time sorting stock, not up there all the time though like a home office. I had the bathroom split in two to make space for that!
