What retro things have you done today?

guy in village I work in put up a post giving away his old computer if you collected it. got in first and went and nabbed it.

Winbond mainboard with SD and DDR RAM slots. Pentium1 133MHz CPU, 32MB SDRAM and a Hercules Terminator 3D GPU. Also has ESS 3D soundcard and a massive Modem board running Windows 95.

This is what we retro enthusiasts call "a good day".

Enjoy!

If anyone needs any old RAM I might be able to help. We have a box of just old "junk" in the server room at work. Full of sticks of EDO and SD-RAM all nicely put in anti-static bags oddly lol

They have no use for it so may ask nicely if I can liberate for a good cause :D

Looking at PCI graphics cards as a viable windows 95 upgrade. Have a best offer on a matrix parhelia. Always fancied one but never bought one when they were about. 3Dfx boards are a stupidly priced no go sadly :(

Need to play the waiting game in this hobby. I run a Nvidia Riva128 in my Pentium machine which is good for Win95 while also providing excellent DOS compatibility. I run an Orchid Righteous 3DFX card alongside that. Picked those both really cheap £5 for the Riva and £7 for the Orchid.

Its easy to start throwing money at BIN's but play it smart :-)

I feel like building myself a xp machine to run some old xp era games, I dont really know much about the chipsets and gfx cards of the times can anyone recommend a decent build?

Talking of playing the waiting game i won an auction for a bunch of add in cards (14 to be exact) off ebay last week. I was only interested in a few of the cards which were sound cards. The Cards in question were

Genuin Adlib ISA Card
Sound Blaster Pro 2.0
Yamaha YMF724 WaveForce

Really happy about the Adlib as i have always wanted one for the collection, but would never pay the prices it commands.

Something like an Athlon XP Would be pretty cool I should think. My 95/xp dual booter is a 2500+ Athlon XP @ 3200 speeds, 1.5gb RAM and a 6600gt

If you want an agp 6600le I have one knocking about I don't really have a home for

excellent, i will do myself some research based off that spec, might take you up on the gfx card offer :)

Its funny seeing posts here and on VOGONS :P

I am currently winning that auction @almoststew1990 posted although I fully expect it to get rather pricey near the end.

Also for my windows 95 machine I am going with an S3 virge as that is what I had on my first pc and they are very easily obtained (I got mine for £8 from ebay)

Same card as me :) that S3 wasn't a bad little card

I only found vogons recently, the media download area is a complete godsend!

Been having a think about what retro hardware I have, more than I thought.....oops!

Custom build - Thermaltake Soprano Piano Black / ATHLONXP 2500+ / 1.5GB DDR400 / NF7S / 6600GT 128MB
Boxed SHUTTLE XPC SN45G - Athlon XP 2500+ @ 3200+ / 2gb DDR400 / HIS 9800 pro
SHUTTLE XPC SV25 - Pentium3 900mhz / 512MB PC133 SDRAM / FX5200 PCI w/OGL Wrapper enabled
Simply Computers - Pentium 1- 166 MMX / 32mb EDO / 4mb Hercules Terminator 3D

That's not too bad a list to be honest. It's when you have an assortment of 90% working GeForce 2MXs that you need to think "right I need to actually bin some stuff!"

My retro activity for today was to replace my dying Acumos AVGA2 with...

zFMbXOal.jpg

An Acumos AVGA2. Just as before, it offered the best price (£35) to performance (PDF download)by miles on eBay and could actually have a stab at Doom (if I wasn't on a cacheless 386SX 40MHz). There are trident 9000 and 8900C's for much more which are slower. I was tempted, just to have a different card, but decided I'd take the performance improvement.

I suppose I also got Sim City Creator on DS... kind of retro? (to be fair, Cities Skylines makes anything prior to it retro!)

I'm thinking of bidding up to say £30 or so as I kind of want a fastish Coppermine supporting ISA board for Windows 98/DOS but might not bother (especially if your bid is already more than that!)
