CPU score is 5324.

Im pretty sure its to do with the soundcard drivers. Windows crashed during initial install while detecting PNP devices and bluescreens often with driver issues. Going to do a clean install with the AWE64 instead.

The BSOD happens with or without it. Every time you try to "restart" for any reason. Normal shutdowns are fine. Googling the stop code suggested it was sound or virtual device drivers

I gave up with the via itx thing after about 2h of setting up and 10 minutes of use. I went back to ol' faithful slot 1 board. Getting stuck into Sim City 2000 again, and I've fixed Midtown Madness graphical bug so that should run flawlessly on 900MHz Slot 1 with a 5900XT!

Slot 1 with an ISA slot is all we really need

But sticking with that is no fun is it..

Just started to reinstall windows and the HDD started to sound like a car struggling not to cut out. Back to CF it is then.

Socket 370 with ISA is also just as usable, but there is something alluring about slot-1 (more so Slot-2, but that still evades me).

I’m getting more use out of my Slot-1 PIII 850 machine than any other at the moment! That’ll change when my Socket 604 kit arrives, but that will likely be a short lived “play” with new kit, then back to type.

BSOD persists even after format and switch from HDD-CF

The PC is acting quite weird actually. sometimes "restart in MSDOS mode" results in the "its now safe to turn off your computer" screen even though I am using the ATX power and it normally would shut itself off.

Tried with it on and off. while installing the voodoo drivers it shuts the whole PC off halfway through. Really odd one.

Yep. My next plan. Although my converters are in the loft so that will be one for another day now.

This is the motherboard.

My install process is:
win98
ALI IDE drivers
ALI AGP Drivers (both from original CD)
amigamerlin voodoo drivers
DX 7.0 (From gigabyte CD)
then 3dmark99.

The restart issue is there from the beginning. Last time I was not able to get past installing the V3 drivers as it would restart/straight up turn off halfway through.

I only have a PCI card to hand. Im pretty sure it did do it with that installed too.

The FSB is 100

Speaking of Slot 1, I had a board arrive today. Bought it from the guy on ebay who does the erratic listings! It has a damaged cap, but that will get replaced. Board works fine. Flashed it with a Powerleap Bios. Its a Gigabyte GA-6BXE Rev 2.0

I'm going to do nice high end build with this Slot 1 1Ghz and a Geforce 3 Ti500

Yes I guess I have so much experience in using it now I rarely have issues and it "just works". I don't like building and then dismantling a PC within a day or two so hopefully I'll stick with my new new new new new set up I've got of 900MHz MX440 AWE32 with an ITX ivy i3 and GTX645 for XP. Actually get some games played!

Evercase make a Beige Tower which I've had my eye on for a while now but held off from buying, but some turned up on ebay and I managed to snag one at a great price. The great thing is the case is effectively brand new and it includes all the extra options (Fans, HDD cradles, Front USB/Audio.) It doesn't look like its been used. I'm going to put the P3 1ghz in this and make a real nice build.
