What retro things have you done today?

Hey mate just wondered if you ever did this build as I’ve got hold of an Ultra 24 case and want to do something similar:)
The caddies are rare, or at least, rare to find on eBay. I've got a fully working Sun Ultra 40 that was always intended to be a case for a watercooled dual socket-370 build (the front would make a superb intake for a radiator), but I just can't bring myself to destroy the machine as it's in too nice of a condition (though I do need caddies!).

my god that is an absolute beauty.
Yep, they have a certain class about them, most of the Sun hardware is the same. As I alluded to back when I posted it originally, it's a complete weapon, built like a tank and just very nice to take apart/service:

So as alluded to in a previous post about the shuttle and already having an XP project underway, here's my Sun Ultra 40 workstation. Originally I bought it (for a pittance, they seem to have gone up in value over the last few years) to be a donor case for one of my Dual PIII rigs as I figured the gigantic mesh front panel would be excellent for a radiator in a watercooled build, however when it arrived it was too nice to ruin, so it sat in the loft waiting for me to get around to. Today was the day it came down from the dark and into the light. It'll be getting SLI'd GTX 480s alongside its dual Opteron 280s and 8GB of ECC DDR. This thing is a weapon in more ways than one, built like a tank, weighs around 8.5 metric ****tonnes and has a PSU with incredibly strong rails (even the 3.3v rail will do 30A! the 5v rail 33A, alongside its 4 12V rails at 17A a piece).

To get an idea of how much this weighs, it came on a pallet!

Pics in Spoiler.

I did/have/in progress of doing so at the moment. :D It's currently running:

R5 3600
32GB Corsair LPX
Gigabyte X570 Pro
LSI 9211-8i
Intel i3-530 Quad NIC

ESX is installed and serving 5 VMs, couple of Docker hosts and it's performing admirably. Still waiting on a 4x 2.5" Icy Dock bay for the top, and 12TB/14TB WD external drives to come back on sale at a decent price. Managed to get 3 spuds for disks sorted at 25 quid, but even that felt like too much money!

Cooling has been interesting, but I've managed to get a Noctua Slim 120mm in front of the drive bays, and another 120mm the other side to draw air through. I'm a bit concerned that the only exhaust is a single 120mm but we'll see how that goes.

I've been meaning to tidy it up and get some pics taken, will do so in the next week or so when the caddy hopefully arrives. What are your plans?

Those 40’s are beautiful, love the colour and the interior layout is so nicely done. Only slightly frustrating thing is, you can’t do much with them like you say without butchering it, which would be a real shame. Like the lack of standard ATX power supply form factor. What’s the spec of that one? Did you pay much for it?

I seem to recall I paid around £20-25 for it, back when they were completely worthless, though they all seem to be going up in value now (as does most retro kit). This one is 2x Opteron 256 3GHz CPUs (Socket 940), 8GB of DDR (PC3200), two Geforce GTX 480s in SLI, two 256GB SSDs, and two 1TB HDDs.

That’s utterly bonkers. £25

Give you £30 for it :D

Absolutely awesome, nice spec as well - wish I could find one anywhere near that kind of money!

Im not entirely sure yet, but I’ve wanted one for ages, I just love the look of the case and as you know obviously based on standard ATX makes it easy to use. Definitely share some pics when you can I would love to see it!

I can see why that didn't get bid up very high, no images of the actual box contents! Always wary of listings like that, hopefully fine though.

I was wary but the listing does say the card is in good condition so I will see soon :)

Pretty low price for a boxed one if its all good. Seller seems genuine too

Someone on vogons pointed out that without seeing the contents yet it could be anything in there.. Will have to wait and hope :)
That’d be my only concern given the description mentions a card. My boxed Matrox Mistique turned out to be an S3 card in a mint Matrox Mistique box and accessories.

Seller genuinely didn’t know, and I got a full refund but still :(
