What retro things have you done today?

Not sure if PSP is allowed as retro, but changed out the analogue stick on my PSP1000 today. Hilariously easy, and so cheap.

PSPs are glorious with an amazing catalog imo. I'm sure they aren't considered retro but still I'd say this sub is the best place to discuss them compared to the modern console sub

What are you playing on it?

Its a shame but all is good! Been doing really well on ebay myself lately and have paypal money burning a hole in my pocket.... Trying to keep away from buying hardware now I have my dell 486 and main P3 rig but there is always the chance of fun things!

Spent a bit of time today cleaning up the insides of my P3 machine and added a case fan as im pretty sure an 866mhz P3 was never meant to be passively cooled... I am beginning to not love this motherboard too. I am pretty sure a geforce3 ti 200 should beat a voodoo 3 3000 on 3dmark99 but the V3 wins comfortably... Even worse after installing the VIA agp drivers. Still I dont really play anything that pushes it so need to try and ignore 3dmark!

I sent my Amiga 1200 off for repair. It's never had a recap and some keyboard keys weren't working. So I grovelled to an acquaintance from the South West Amiga group and it's on its way to him for both.

@LewisRaz I loved my 486, but flogged it last Xmas as my Pentium 90Mhz did everything better. What plans have you for yours?

My P3 is a 700 MHz Slot 1 setup with Voodoo 3 card. That will be my next machine to make an appearance.

@!bluetonic! To be honest it more of a thing to look at than something that gets used. The P3 gets a run out quite a few times a week. The 486 set up just makes me happy to have around and occasionally flick the old fashioned switch and hear the HDD clicking itself to pieces. I have started trying to play some of the games on the 486 but still its probably only on for more than 30mins once a week. There really isnt anything it can do that my P3 system cant do better (Especially General midi games..).

I'm sure a few find it odd to have an entire PC as an ornament but I know there are some here who understand it!

Also it seems I should stop posting saying im done with hardware because I am currently winning an ATX ss7 board that I put a fairly serious bid on too!

Started to look at what I might clear out, I've got far too many unused bits that I'm never going to get around to using.

First up for the chopping block is an MSI MS6191 mATX board with a 900MHz Slot-A Athlon (I think it's a Slot-A Thunderbird, rather than an Athlon classic), and 128MB PC-100. I've literally had this powered up for 20 seconds to make sure it POSTs, and done nothing with it since. I'll likely throw it up onto the bay (classic, retro, rare :p), any takers for how much it'll fetch?

If you dont mind waiting then do buy it now. I have had a really good result from doing this so far!

The problem with BIN is knowing what to advertise at! I’ve no idea!

Can get the motherboard for £80 from Germany, but it seems overpriced... maybe £60-70 if that.

the cpu I can’t find, but 750mhz Athlons are about £35, perhaps call that £50.

list as buy it now with offers for 14 days, if no offer or sale, reduce them a fiver a time.

I did/have/in progress of doing so at the moment. :D It's currently running:

R5 3600
32GB Corsair LPX
Gigabyte X570 Pro
LSI 9211-8i
Intel i3-530 Quad NIC

ESX is installed and serving 5 VMs, couple of Docker hosts and it's performing admirably. Still waiting on a 4x 2.5" Icy Dock bay for the top, and 12TB/14TB WD external drives to come back on sale at a decent price. Managed to get 3 spuds for disks sorted at 25 quid, but even that felt like too much money!

Cooling has been interesting, but I've managed to get a Noctua Slim 120mm in front of the drive bays, and another 120mm the other side to draw air through. I'm a bit concerned that the only exhaust is a single 120mm but we'll see how that goes.

I've been meaning to tidy it up and get some pics taken, will do so in the next week or so when the caddy hopefully arrives. What are your plans?

My initial plan was to fit a big rad in the front so I got a bit carried away with the dremmel. I’ve since changed my mind, but have 2x 140mm intakes. The board has 2 nvme drives, and the space on the wall has lots of room for mounting SSD’s in the future....slowly getting there. If I was doing it again though I would leave the optical bay in place. As I’ve not got a job to blank it off. Doh.

Wow, you really did get creative with the dremmel. :D Yeah, agreed - I would have left the optical bay in too. Could always get a rivet gun or bolt it back in?

Mine looks a bit busier that yours, STILL waiting on the Icy dock bay for the top from Hong Kong (was 20 quid cheaper, wish I'd just ponyed up the cash now) but the WD 14TB drives are on special so I can get the NAS VM built and get data migrated across soon.

That Wraith Prism nightmare is going ASAP, probably a BeQuiet Slim or something going on there instead.

I would boot it back in but I really butchered it getting it out :(

And then realised my radiator didn’t really fit too well. DOH.

That looks awesome, did you print those brackets for the fans?

How did you figure out the wiring for the front power light and the power button?

Oh no :( Hmm, should be easy enough to design and print some brackets to suspend a 5 1/4 drive or something like that in there?

I did yep, just rummaged around on Thingiverse for a couple of 120mm sleds and then double sided tape to hold them in place. Not sure how effective it'll be at full tilt, but some long as here's fresh air moving over the drives I'll be happy for the moment.

For the front panel connectors I de-pinned the block connector and used single/dual DuPont connectors on the original loom. Used this reference as a guide: http://mroach.com/2020/08/sun-ultra-24-reborn/#front-panel :)

I would be selling a lot of my stuff that I don't use enjoy but 99% of my stuff only works 99% of the time and I just know I'll end up with a poor feedback or return :( it makes me want to sell as known working kits so that's my preferred option I think.

Managed to kill two birds with one stone by finding a very reasonably priced Geforce 3 (Vanilla, not Ti) on eBay that also happened to have an Apple G4 Cube AGP riser attached to it.

I've wanted a GeForce 3 for a while, I've got a GeForce 256, a GeForce 2 Pro, a GeForce 4 Ti4800, an FX5800 (technically a Quadro FX1000, but it's the same), a GeForce 6800 and a GeForce 7900, but a GeForce 3 eluded me. I had also killed my G4 Cube's AGP riser by trying to shoehorn a more powerful video card into the Cube last year and had been unable to find a spare part (again for reasonable money).

The two together were £22, winner :)

That said, because this has clearly been modded into a G4 Cube at some point in it's life, I need a new PCI bracket for it as it's been cut down. So on the hunt now for one that'll fit from a dead GPU.
