What retro things have you done today?

i havnt actually tried anything that needs CD Audio, the main game im using it for is Klingon Academy , and i have the original 6x CD-Roms for this. , but yes i am mounting other ISOs directly from the Compact flash card as well but my boot drive was only 4gb so i needed more space for installs. Im still having the occasional issue with shutting down and restarting cleanly, and im not sure if this is the compact flash cards or just forgetting that windows 98 wasnt that stable anyway
Are right, ive got a 120GB OS drive, 20GB secondary and USB 2.0 pci card with 64gb usb stick and 128gb usb stick.
Do you have Win98SE or Win98? Also, does that cf card / board have a CD audio analogue in connection?

win 98 SE. the cf card board doesnt have audio,. as its replicating a HDD not a CD, its just got Master slave jumper and power

Not sure why you are getting stutters / issues shutting down with win 98 se. Mine seens quite stable. Do you have any other PCI cards installed?
Thanks. I wonder if a device does exist that emulates a cd/dvd drive with an audio cable but that you mount images to instead of using physical cd/dvd media

I think the CD audio thing from mounted CDs is well known, it take a lot of cpu to power it. I think WDM drivers for your soundcard help. Been a while since I looked into it tho

Well I had a clear out of boxes from when I moved, other half reckons I hoard stuff, don't know what she's on about.

Think I maybe able to build a Windows 98/XP machine with some of these items, shame I don't have old beige cases anymore. Although I do remember these being mounted in a silver Lian Li case and the Antec Sonata at some point.

Was thinking of buying a test rig so I can see what still works, as these would've been replaced via upgrades. I've got the original boxes for the DFIs somewhere too!

Definitely a nostalgia trip finding this lot! I've got a Q6600 somewhere too, still need to go through my boxes.

DFI Lanparty board, which model is that...instant envy!!
I would love an RDX200 again. I picked one up on the OCuk clearance area for £30 years and years ago. It was SUCH a fantastic board and my 939 X2 ran beautifully in it at 2.6ghz I think it was.

I feel you completely on the possibly hording front. I have a little box of stuff that I most likely going to go now. 2-3 agp cards, a broken voodoo 2 if I can't fix it and 2 half decent PCI gfx cards along with a few motherboard / CPU combos I picked up just because lol

That was me last year before the big clearout :P
Now I just have 3 systems and about 10 assorted cards.

Do have 2 cases i need to move on... Dont want to post them tho as they are big

I think that is kind of the position I want to get to.

P1 MMX, Socket A and the 754 builds. Those are old platforms that have sentimental attachment. Outside of that the rest I will move on whilst it's worth a few quid. And free some garage space up.

My (mostly final) 3 are:

Dell OEM DX2 66mhz. 16mb ram, SB2.0. This will get used the least but I really cherish it... Managed to get it for an amazing price still with the original boxes
P3 866mhz 512mb ram. GF3ti200. SBLive. SW60XG. This is my main machine, use it for gaming probably as much as my windows 10 pc.
C2D Q6600. 2gb ram. 3870x2. SB audigy 2. My XP machine that with gifts from paradigm and a workmate cost me £12 in total. For those XP games that the P3 cant really handle (NFSU2 being the main one so far!)

I feel the same about the Simply PC, finding it crazily for free and having the matching CRT with it makes it pretty special to me and something I really want to take care of.

Oddly have just dug out nfsu2 myself ready to play wheh the 754 is up and running :). One of my favourite games of all time and excited to play it through again along with Star Trek: Elite Force

Went for a walk and just around the corner was a garage sale. £50 later and I'm walking away with a boxed PS3, 2 dualshocks and about a dozen games. Not a stellar deal, but it'll do.
Cleaned the PS3 up. Sounds a bit loud, will take it apart for a thorough cleaning and replacement thermal goop. Turns out it's an imported Japanese 60gb, with the Emotion Engine on board, and it's running Firmware 3.01. Evidently not used in donkeys years!

The call for CFW is strong! Plus, plays SACD and I have quite a few of them.

Quite a score to get an import boxed system! Nicely done

I'd say that's a pretty good deal there, compared to Gumtree and the likes!

I am kind of lost without my S775 PC, it turns out it was the backbone of my retro gaming! It does mean I am putting time into that 1GHZ 370 PC I built. I completed the expansion to Unreal last night (Return to Na Pali) and it was a lot of fun.

I've got a AM2+ board on the way so I might track down a Phenom II X3 (just to be interesting!) as my replacement XP PC.

I tried playing FEAR on the Pentium D 950 X1950 PC and it's not very happy at 1280*1024.

Recorded At Doom's Gate from the Turtle Beach Malibu this morning. It's my first time recording from old DOS pc's. Let me know how it sounds.

Sounds great mate! Nice and clean.

I look forward to hearing all of your cards :P

I prefer videos like this rather than the ones that directly compare cards by chopping and changing which one you are listening to.

Thanks dude! Yeah I like to have the music in its own video.

I've been listening to quite a few game midis through this today and I have to say, for a sound card the midi on the Malibu is really at the high end of the spectrum. I've been listening to the Rise of the Triad game midi's and the sound track itself is actually really awesome! I recorded two and I think it sounds fantastic! CCCool sounds particularly awesome!

That is a really crisp sounding card!

I have spent the last couple of days filming clips for the compaq deskpro restoration. Got a nice little montage of clips I was really pleased with so decided to crack on with the internals today which included testing the new psu....

No explosions but also no life from the PC :(

It was filthy and had signs of moisture/dust mixture over a few bits so its been in for a shower and is now out to dry.... Hoping that can fix it. There is a flashing green LED on the motherboard so its definitely getting standby power.
