What retro things have you done today?

Uploaded another sound capture, This time from the Dreamblaster X2 running the Buran V10 Soundbank. Sounds pretty awesome!

Really like that one! Very clean sound.

Ive swapped out my SW60XG for the diy adlib for a bit. Played Theme hospital until 2am this morning as I seriously need to finish it for the first time ever!

Also ordered a 4 way KVM so perhaps I can keep the dell 486 set up as well.

I am looking to play a wing commander game once I finish TH. I originally had it on the SNES and have really found memories of it... Which version would be best played today (And without too much messing around with slowing down the PC)

Looking at WC3 but not sure..

wow that sounds amazing! the frequencies are all really clear and its not often you get that clear punch of bass from the bottom end so well.

also just remembered that I bought a Wraith Prism cooler a while back, not sure it would look that fitting and in the correct era on a 754 but a bit me wants to try as a 92mm fan will surely be a bit quieter than shin 70mm cooler master (that always seen noisy!)

Oh! and an Akasa Venom AMD tower cooler too. just banged that on. idle 31 > load 39 deg lol. hell of a lot quieter too. PWM being bought in made such a big difference didnt it!

I originally detailed the performance loss with my NEC card and K6-3/Voodoo3 PC on VOGONS: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=73627 I was experiencing a performance loss of up to 40% in 3DMark99MAX/Quake2 and general CPU performance benchmarking software.

This was the case for simply having the card present (even when disabled in device manager). The only fix was removal of the card. The VIA card is much better in the K6-3 system, only really losing me a few % performance (1-3% depending on situation), but my older Pentium 200MMX system the VIA still lost anywhere up to about 7% system performance.

I've tested and see different results to you. Almost identical with and without the card connected.

Pentium III 550Mhz, Voodoo 3 3000G.
USB driver being used is Nusb36e.exe

Belkin 5 port USB 2 Hub card. NEC D720101GJ on the chip. P120101 - 6X3A on the card

Card connected and enabled in device manager.

Guess it's a bit of a perfect storm situation then where certain board / chip combinations are affected more than others......I have a card here I picked up with the NEC chip on it. In debate whether to use on the XP system or try it in the 98

Yeh, it could be a combinaton of many things. PCI slot used, other cards installed (PCI/ISA/AGP) , drivers, motherboard, RAM...

It would be interesting to try the exact card in your machine though (and yours in mine) Try the NEC chip card in both machines :)

Decided to re-paste this today and also put a bit of oil on the fan bearing as it was sounding slightly scratchy. Tried to clean the fan as best as possible. Sounds a lot better now and has some fresh paste on.

Fitted an Iomega Zip100 drive to my 486, and have an external one attached to my "modern" PC so I can copy over media without needing to rely on putting an insecure device on my network.

Lots of love for the zip drive. My uni had them back in the good old days.

Fast forward to today. I have a parallel external drive with an adapter for my Amiga 1200, PC connectivity too and lots of 100 MB media. I also have an internal unit in my P3 tower.

Postie arrived with some nice items today

The 486 board I bought the other week. Its a Boxed Asus 486 EISA/VL board. Manual and EISA Configuration disk is included! First time messing with EISA boards. Just need to pick up a EISA disk controller. Will used the VLB slot for VGA.

Spotted this Radeon 9800 Pro yesterday so bought it. Arrived today! (less than 24hrs)

both off ebay. Bad news is the 9800 is dead. No post and tried it in 3 different machines. Just speaking to the seller to get a refund.
That sucks about the 9800. Hope the seller sorts it out.

I am in a bit of an ebay battle atm. Sold a compaq pc. Buyer instantly claimed it did not work (it did) so I sent a return label straight away and was awaiting its return... Which never came. Buyer then escalated the case which quickly turned in my favor as the buyer has not used my delivery label yet. eBay have given them until the 12th to return it or case closed.

Just annoying as I did the right thing and sent a return label without question. (£9 expense!!)

I also forgot my awe32 was listed and it just sold :S

What is it about eBay atm!

I have I think just been scammed for £55 for something too. Guy has disappeared second I made payment 2 weeks ago. Said dispatched etc.

I'm more and more annoyed with eBay sellers that lie about their location. I wanted an AMD K6-2 (I've got a K6 and K6-3) so found a nice 500MHz variant listed as for sale in Cambridge. Buy it now, paid and two days later marked as dispatched with Lithuania Post.

FML.

That is a complete Mickey take!

I had a right game with a seller recently. Parcel got delivered to the wrong address by Hermes, and the seller somehow thought it was my fault and it was up to me to try and sort out the missing parcel. Ended up going through eBay and getting a refund. Seller continued to send me messages saying I've caused him anxiety and took the only money out of his bank account. Right loon!

In good news the Asus 486 board works! The Dallas is dead but it's socketed so easily replaceable. I'm going to try and do a nice DX2 66mhz Build around it.

My Hercules Prophet 4000XT AGP (Original Kyro) has arrived from Poland, in great condition.

I still want to get hold of a PCI version of both the Kyros but I’m not willing to pay the current going rate for one that the seller knows what he has! There’s one on eBay now, but £75 seems steep when this AGP one cost me £20 shipped from Poland!

£20! That's an absolute bargain. Nicely done there indeed

I was a fan of the Kyro card. The logic of only drawing what the user can see made sense. As we know, it didn't catch on.

I've sold lots on eBay recently. All as parts / not working.

I usually end up breaking stuff trying to test it and the buyer would probably complain anyway.

Everything goes via Royal Mail second class signed for.

Today I was copying Whdload demos across to my Amiga via a CF to PCMCIA adapter.
