What retro things have you done today?

I have been helping someone from vogons who had questions about the SW60XG.

Something about "Capital Tone Fallback".

I have no idea what that means but apparently I have helped with the samples I have sent them!

The game in the picture is Virtual Pool. I picked up a Packard Bell CD with this and Descent on a long time ago!

I see a lot of references to CTF with the different ROM versions of the SC-55. I don't fully understand its function, but it was emitted in some of the versions on the Sound Canvas Series.

I am having the worst HDD luck. I think I had 5/6 fail on a p166 build I have been slowly building up (mainly to try and sell and stop me from being tempted to case swap again..)
Now the 40gb in my main retro rig has started completely failing to get power. Wiggling the MOLEX does fix it temporarily but I cannot see any problem with the solder points on it.

Issue with the pogo pins between the board and the motor assembly? Try taking the IDE board off the disk, make sure the pogo pins move freely and potentially clean them and the corresponding pads with contact cleaner and an eraser if they look corroded or tarnished.

I think I might just end up employing my IDE - SATA adapter and get myself a cheap SSD. This machine is used a lot and I just want it to work!
I have a 60gb hdd but that appears to be faulty too as I can hear it spin up but no jumper settings make it show in bios! (even with 32gb clip)

Also what on earth happened here:

Perhaps I should list my copy up for a "Bargain" £100 :P

Very good find!
Tested today in my P4 shuttle (had to remove PCI bracket to do so, only room for a single slot card!), card works just fine, just waiting on my Dimsatech Test Bench and my Asrock 4coreDual SATA2 to arrive and then I can do a truckload of benchmarking with PCI, AGP and PCIe cards all on the one system.

My downgrade matx board arrived today. Incredibly dusty but seems to be working fine.

So now I have matx with DOS sound thanks to the AWE32. It has a built in ESS Solo1 which is cool.

The fsb goes up to 133MHz but I'm not overclocking anything yet!

It has a few dumb design decisions like the fan header is completely inaccessible with a long ISA card and the power switch has to be bent a bit. I might need to hack up a short fan header on one of my cables or something.

Nice board! Did you pick it up off ebay? Aopen are a solid brand! I'm on the hunt for a MATX BX Slot 1 board as I have a S370 PIII 1.1ghz here. It's currently in a Gigabyte i815 board but no isa lot :-(

Yeah, £46 delivered "used" but untested. It's a ZX which seems to be BX for matx form factor according to wiki but I don't know if BX was also on matx boards. I don't know if it supports copper mines either. I'm now not sure what to do with my i815 1GHz system this has replaced...

I am going to try it with no expansion cards but dont hold much hope!
I’ve had boards that fail to power up before that I’ve bridged the ATX PS_ON pin whilst the PSU was connected and magically they’ve booted up. Possibly worth a test if it’s failing to turn the PSU on.

Well I thought I had solved it. Removed everything and took the motherboard out of the case and spotted a jumper near the battery.. Moved it over and finally the PC would turn on.

It only turns on for about 5 seconds tho. You can see post codes moving through but then it cuts out (Tested on 2 PSUs). A couple of times it did not cut out. 1 of those times the display would show for a few seconds but be scrolling like an old crt that wasnt in sync. The other time it stopped with no output with code 4E 48.

Not sure if the CPU could be sketchy as thats also an unknown. (it doesnt actually look great)

Very odd to see it cut out like that. When it does it you have to turn the whole PSU off for a few seconds before it will power up again.

This board arrived the weekend. It was listed as a "Computer Motherboard" and came with a AMD DX4 100 CPU also. It arrived in a Jiffy bag and the top most simm slot was cracked, but surprisingly is works! I message the seller and we agreed to a partial refund.

I couldn't find the manufacture of the board, but according to Vogons its an Abit PI4T. I'm going to see if I can get a new simm slot and replace it at some point. I don't really need to use all 4 slots but I would like to replace the broken slot.

Its pretty dire out there at the moment isn't it :(

In some good news, i just won a boxed Gameport MS sidewinder FF Pro joystick for £11 posted :). Sadly has no PSU so need to try and source one from somewhere. No one has one collecting dust from a dead MS device do they?
