What retro things have you done today?

Will do :)

I was looking to flip them... But Kind of want to keep 1 now! Hopefully they both work.. Pictures look clean enough :)

I got this yesterday for 15

Seems a fairly decent board

The card will be worth holding onto mate. Will work nicely alongside the Adlib and ESSFM sound really good too.

That's a nice board too can't go wrong with Asus stuff of this period.

If I can get it setup right I can use the adlib as is. SW60XG on port 300. ESS for SBPRo ESSFM and also the ESS wavetable on port 330.

Will be good to get some recordings of that wavetable for youtube too. One of my videos is about to hit 200 views :). Almost done with the "Tiny" Laptop video too but need to do the next bit with the camera on me which isnt easy with 3 females in the house competing to make noise!

Finally got around to testing my Asus P3C-E and it won't even POST :(

I just get ---- on the POST test card, and occasionally C0-- if I reset or clear CMOS whilst it's running.

Going to try putting a different BIOS on it, but Asus decided that this board was going to have a non-socketed BIOS chip, so hot-air station here I come :(

After being impressed with the Moukey 6 Channel mixer I picked up a while ago, I picked up the smaller 4 channel version in the Prime sale for my Pentium MMX machine. Came to £18 and it is a cracking little device!

That mixer looks great!

my weekend purchases arrived today. Tested the motherboard which threw a few fits at first but now happily posts with 512mb of ram and a 800mhz P3.

Next it was onto the soundcards. Windows 98 recognized it straight away and installed the drivers. I moved my sw60xg to address 300 and was able to set adlib, sw60xg, essFM and the essWT all working on passport.mid!
The SBLive did not like being moved up a PCI slot and now would not be detected but moving it up one more sorted that. All 4 cards working as I wanted (at least in windows..)

That was until I sealed the case up and plugged it all back in properly. Now the mouse is gone, the PC wont load its display drivers and I get runddl32 error after startup..

Oh well, clean windows 98 install time. Great way to spend my birthday evening :P

I do like the way it looks with the patch cables. Hopefully the clean install helps.

Looks good @LewisRaz. Looks clean but i don't envy having to balance all the line inputs through the software mixers. You should get one of the little mixers :)

What GFX you got in that machine? Glad the board worked without much issue for you. I'd recommend the DOS drivers in philscomputerlabs review of the ESS card. They have a nice installation where it allows you to select the ports etc via number prompts. really simple. Also if you have any plans with the 2nd card let me know. It would be perfect for my MMX machine.

Its always the way... config a machine.. put the lid on and it borks itself. And Happy Birthday! :D

Haha cheers mate, I dont want to fall foul of the the forum rules but you have first dibs on the 2nd card of course. (Mods should note that we talk outside of this forum too!)

Those little mixers (isnt that what little mix fans are called?!..) do look good, might well be a future purchase.

The gpu in the machine is a GF4 mx 440. Massive overkill for the p3 550 but it was all I had ready to go. I plan to fit my TNT2 Ultra into it but that needs a new fan on it.

The TNT2 Ultra will round the machine off nicely. Is it not something that could be passively cooled with a larger heatsink? I had a diamond tnt2 ultra and that had a heatsink glued on with cement!

Success at last! I removed the adlib clone in the end as it has really low volume and is never really going to be used...
It took a lot of faffing around to get the ESS chip to give me digital sound in DOS but now it is working fine. Just had to move the DMA around a bit.
Final set up:
SW60XG @ midi address 300.

ESS ES690F Wavetable @ 330.
ESS ES1868 for SB/Pro support in dos (Very clear sound!) and ESSFM which I really like.

SBLive for windows 98 duties.

Everything has worked so far with all 3 midi devices except duke3d which could not detect the ESS wavetable for some reason.

Very happy with this set up now.

Nice work dude! I really like the ESSFM and games that support it natively sound really good. I think it sounds really good in Wolf3D (Even though its just standard OPL)

I've got my eye on the new X2GS from Serdashop. I own the X2 already but having the Buran bank and a Official Roland GS bank on the same WT card sounds tempting!

If I get one I'll fit the old X2 into the Korg NS5R Midi module.

Did you see LGR blurbs recently did a video on the X2GS?

I did see it. From the samples I've listened too on Vogon's it sounds really good. Its effectively two high quality banks on one module. The Buran is a top sounding bank in its own right, but to have an official Roland GS bank selectable too is really awesome!

@LewisRaz Not a bad sounding synth. You can hear slight compression on some of the instruments, but then I can imagine its a 1MB sample rom.

If your up for some requests, if you could do System Shock - Medical, and my now go to track Transport Tycoon - Fell Apart On Me.

Very up for requests :)

The post on vogons does suggest it is a 1mb rom!

Do you know any programs for win98 that can play a playlist of Midi files? Media player seems to only open 1 at a time and I want to record the whole TTD soundtrack at once. I have the original midi files and there is an occasional stutter playing them in game.

I went with winamp which also properly plays midi files on the sw60xg which windows and the yamaha player never did!

On track 4 already. This is a smooth work flow now as long as I can get the proper midi files, else I have to use the game itself.

Do you have a link for the proper system shock midi?

Just got a suspected dead 3D Prophet II MX, the original GeForce 2MX, working with a bit of cleaning. Now to benchmark against the Voodoo 3.

EDIT: Spoke too soon, getting a distorted output and crashes when trying to run 3DMark.
