What retro things have you done today?

I've started to fit the parts to the Lian Li.

I'm thinking of doing a custom power cable run as I would like the cables to look as neat as possible. I've changed the HSF from the Scythe Mini in the picture to a LED Zalman CU/Alu cooler which has blue LED's. I've also changed out the rear fan for a Fractal Blue LED Fan. The front fan is the stock 140mm Lian Li Blue LED Fan. I'll upload pictures when I've finished it.

Today I picked up a mega haul of garbage video cards and stuff for £10

Left to right: ATI card, I am guessing a X1550 over a X1300 based on the rest of the cards.
Nvidia 6600GT passive
Nvidia 7900GT
ATi 4850
Nvidia 9600GT
ASUS X58 mobo with an i7 920
Nvidia 8500GT
Nvidia GT550
Nvidia 8800GTS
Nvidia 8800GT/S/X
AM3+ motherboard with an FX4100

Not pictured: a bunch of 6200 Turbocaches' (PCIe), Quadro FX1800 (9800GTish), Quadro FX4800 (GT260 minus)

Since we're on the subject of Pentiums and that era, I picked this up the other day. (middle one!) I have installed drives and drive blanks, something to replace the missing power button, and cleaned it up a bit since I got it.

Currently waiting on a soldering iron to arrive so I can modify the Dallas RTC clone with a coin cell, and I've just given everything a once over, taken the PSU apart to have a look at it, etc.

It looks good to me, but currently untested. I want to make sure all my ducks are in a row before I do the first test power up!

The DVD drive is just temporary, it will have a CD drive in it so its more period.

I added the USB riser, but I still need to meter out the USB header to make sure I put the pins in the right places. I also had to re-mount the serial connector because its standoffs were missing. I robbed some from a GTX480 :p

Soyo SY-5VA Socket 7 Motherboard
Pentium MMX 166MHz
Samsung 256K Pipeline Burst Cache
SDRAM (unknown capacity)
Diamond Stealth SE (S3 Trio32)
ESS AudioDrive PT-230X
Vastec NT-200T 200W AT PSU

Got an 8GB WD hard drive coming for it. I'm going to try it with Windows 95D Lite at first, but it may end up with 98SE depending on whether I can get USB peripherals to work or not.
Hi Akagi, did you manage to confirm the USB header pinouts on that Soyo SY-5VA mobo? I have the same mobo and I'm trying to add a USB cable without any success so far. Would be great if you know the pinouts!

Oh goodness thats going back a bit!

I'm fairly confident that the pinout turned out to be the same as a regular USB header and I just plugged it in, but I can't say for certain, sorry!

All good, was asking just in case. I've been trying to get that P1 system up to peak status for the last couple of weeks, usb header is the last thing to sort out. Cheers

If you're not in a rush I will be able to check for you at some point! But I can't just yet as everything is packed away while we have building work done.

I might have a manual saved for it somewhere though, I'll have a look.

How did you get on with the Retrobrite? I did it on a white PS2 controller a while back and it came up really nicely...

Haven't done it yet, I ran into an obvious issue with trying to fill a 48 litre container with 8 litres of peroxide solution, so I've been collecting milk bottles to take up the space underneath things! :p

8 litres! That's an awful lot! I know that controller is a lot smaller, but I found I didn't need that much at all to get it working - probably used about 300ml total.

I used one of those 'Really Useful Boxes' with the lids that lock down by the handles.

Went to the Game On exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland.

Game On

I have been 3 times now. Once almost 20 years ago in Edinburgh, once 8 years ago in Newcastle and today in Edinburgh again. I had a great time the first two times I went but this time was dire.

I think the biggest problem was there was way to many people allowed in at one time. It felt too crowded and was too noisy. I think I have been spoiled by my recent visit to Arcade Club, Blackpool.

The selection of games was kind of what you expected, your Mario's, Sonics, Street Fighters. They had a few Arcade Machines but the selection on offer was pretty poor. So many of the exhibits had worn out gamepads or pads that were straight up broken. I reckon your average CEX store would have better quality hardware to play on. Previous Game On exhibitions had pinball machines and curiosities like steel battalion and it's crazy controller. There was nothing really like that this time except perhaps a virtual boy which was also a bit broken.

I wish I had just saved my money and put it towards an N64 console instead.

Sorry for the rant. Just had to vent as I was really looking forward to the exhibition.

Bought a GBS Control upscaler and RGB Scart cable for my Super Famicom. Unfortunately the improved picture quality highlights any flaws in the image that were hidden before. There was a fabric like pattern visible in solid colours like this image:

The solution is to lift Pin 3 on the PPU2 chip in the SNES. After doing that the image looks like this:
