What self defence should I learn?

Are you proud of this?

I'm not taking the wee I just don't understand why you'd admit to something like this. I've never been in a fight and I'm proud of that fact - I've managed to resolve 22 years worth of disputes and arguments without anyone having tried to hit me.

Can I also ask how many of those fights you were drunk/coked up for, and how many were with people you thought were friends until the fights started?

fights can happen over anything in glasgow, girls mainly but also stupid things like some idiot decided to come up to your mate and for no reason throw a drink over them.

if you ever go to a bhangra night, i gaurantee their will be at least 3 fights in the course of that one night, they are notorious for fights

I suggest sprinting. Get fit enough to outrun everyone else and you'll be fine.

The age old art of running in the opposite direction of as long as possible :D number one self defence tip!

Followed by the age old art of not getting your self into fights in the first place..... ;)

If i were closer to Adelaide or had 2 more days in a week id do Krav Marga.

Its self defence at its best

I do martial arts and was told that if you split you body into quarters then your legs make up 1/2 your body weight, your head is 1/4 and your upper body including arms is 1/4 also. Now it would be more destructive for someone to kick you as not only are they hitting you with a heavy part of the body but also the part that has the longest reach.

I am not dismissing any other form as superior or inferior but I feel that being skilled in martial arts will provide better all round defence than say boxing. You are more flexible in how to deal with some idiot trying to attack you.

I've never had a fight in my life beyond primary school but Wushu and Tai Chi are great for not only the well being body and mind but also exercise and you don't need to be built like a boxer to use it as self defense in the event you do need to. It's one of those martial arts that allow you to use the energy of your opponent against them with as little energy being used yourself.

Although to be fair if you watch some of the counter-boxers their reactions are stupid fast, and a leg movement is always going to be slower than an arm movement. Having never been in a street fight as I say I don't know but I assume getting the first hit in is 90% of winning.

yeh thats correct - most times its the first person to get a decent hit in or the first punch that wins - most street fights are over in 10-15 seconds, unless both guys are wimps and cant fight

Yeah, that's similar to most martial arts mrk and quite the opposite to boxing.
When I did Ninjutsu for 4 years, the main ideas that was instructed was how to avoid punches/lunges etc and how to adapt those for your own liking.

Not only does these type of disciplines make you learn self defense, it also builds technique.... which is one of the biggest factors in self defence. People will say that the moves you learn aren't effective in the real world, but if you're intelligent and take it seriously then you learn to adapt.

Anyway, my advice would be that if you want to learn actual self defence, then I would go to a few trial classes in a few difference martial arts, but if it's more of a offensive type of defense, then go for the likes of boxing / kick boxing which builds stamina and strength. Then if you like one, STICK with it for a while!

Lastly, to be the most effective fighter, you'd need to learn more than one discipline, as there is literally countless ways of self defence, one way isn't always the best way.

The biggest mistake I ever made was to take up a martial art. I got my black belt and a whole host of problems to go with it - I broke my neck twice, and can now no longer kick above my waist because both my knees are buggered. To top it off I get terrible back ache.

Some mornings I struggle to stand up out of bed and need help. Currently in physio for my knees and neck. I'm what you'd technically class as the worlds worst black belt - since getting the grading, my self-defense ability has taken ten steps backwards, as has the quality of my life on a day-to-day basis.

Bear that in mind before you assume all excercise is good excersise.

:p

No, the best defence is a good offense :p

deflection, neutralization and restraint are far less likely to risk an assault charge though. The more training you have, the more careful you have to be with regards to what constitutes a reasonable response...

Indeed. You might win a fight, but end up with a ABH charge afterwards.
