What sort of Mileage is it worthwhile getting a Diesel?

A discussion doesn't always stay within the boundaries of the first sentence uttered. There were replies to West's original question to which he has responded to.

Wasn't meaning we have to stick soley to the thread title, yes that would be silly. But at least staying within a good distance of the original subject.

This has gone a fair bit off topic talking about the OP's finances and evaluating his handling of them which is a bit rude IMO.

Insurance is only £100 more than the 1.6/1.8, I was shocked, never been able to get insurance on anything like that LOL

Indeed. I pay £850 FC on my 1.6 Focus @ 18.

They wanted 90 more for the 2.0 :D. Very flexible cars to insure unless you go for an ST or RS then they get you.

You must have one duff Mini west as they are generally very reliable.

They are not economical though for what they are though.

And a Focus? Why? A Focus is for a middle aged mum.

Unless it has ST on the back. :p

Yes, it might be considered rude by some but I don't care. He is a member of our community and a contributor to motors and regardless of his motoring history, I'd hate for him to make a mistake when buying a new car. I want him to do the right thing and do not wish him to end up in a situation which he later regrets, therefore I will say what needs to be said, even if it is rude. As sad as it may sound, I care about the members of this forum and hate it when wrong or silly advice is given out just for the sake of being nice. I'm not coming across rude just for the sake of it, I just want to hammer an important point home, a point which I feel is pertinent.

What's the point in posting "Yeah, great idea mate" when it isn't? Saying that sort of thing when you know it is bullcrap is irresponsible and stupid.

West is a good lad and I think with enough persuasion he will come round and see the situation with some clarity. If it requires me to be upfront and rude with him then so be it. I'd rather him fall out with me but take on board what I have said than be my best buddy and make a mistake which could potentially affect his personal life in a big way, for the sake of being "nice" to him.

Sorry to hijack the thread but i do 400 miles plus a week.Without reading through the whole thread [which seems to have turned into a row anyway] would a derv benefit me? I currently spend about £80 p/w on Petrol.

What do you drive? I do about 350 a week and it only costs me £40?

seeing as a derv would easily do that 400 miles on £40 then yes... half your fuel costs. :)

Like I said, i'm sitting down with my parents :)

Didnt you post a thread about how your parents are on the verge or breakdown, of which money problems was a major issue!!
Sitting down with your parents to talk about money may not be the best thing...

West,

Noticed in your sig you have picked up a new car, how are you finding it over your Mini?

That was a pretty quick swap it seems

Oh excellent, care to go into how much it cost you etc?

Or was it a straight swap?

Also you got the climate pack that is indeed a necessity.

I'll throw some pics on my motors gallery once I get it.. but not really wanting to make a whole thread over it.. I can already see this one going down the pan again inside 10 minutes...
