I'm supposedly on 8M from BT - in reality, this equates to ...

Still not too bad, though.

That's not a bad speed for a 2Mbps service. Remember you are never going to get the full speed on a speedtest due to overheads, background programs using bandwidth, heavy local traffic, heavy traffic on the remote server (it's being OcUKed :D ), distance from exchange, quality of line, distance between router and master socket, etc etc etc

Thanks for the reply , I feel a bit better now :)

Cheers,

Mark

Further to the above, as with all BB providers it is an 'Up To' 24Mbps service, the provider is in no way obliged to provide the full speed if it is not possible in your case. Though if you are getting that sort of speed maximum all the time it may be worth seeing if you can get a cheaper 8Mbps service as it should provide a comparable speed ;)

So in other words, im paying over the odds? :(

4mbps ere(ntl cable), usage is about 140gig up and down

very very impressed with it, must admit if i payyed the bills i would probably get something 10mbps +++ but hay i dont so ill have to put up with this

freedom2surf 8mb here. Varies really from 6mbit during the day up to 8mbit at night though. Speeds from 600kbps to 900kbps downloading.

Use about 100gb a month.

Voted for 8Mbps+, but having just checked my ISPs site, they seemed to have dropped me from 10,000Kbps (~9.7mbps) down to 6,400Kbps :/

Home connection....Bethere

sync rate:

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,321 / 15,454

Download files at 1700k

Ping to Jolt is: 18ms on a wireless connection

All good. :)

I'm on 1mb, was quite happy with my 512k but you can't argue with a free upgrade :p

Download 10 to 30 Jigga Bites in total per month. (2 PC's, Gaming PC and xbox 360)

EDIT- just checked and my previous figures were way ott.

Pretty happy with my 10Mbit connection from NTL here in Notts. £34.99, no line rental split between 6 of us but rarely used.

Don't really download that much... but hey, it's there if we need it.

512k sdsl but im downgrading back to adsl as my dad no longer needs the high upload speed.

fast enough for me, and its maxed out both ways, almost all the time. :)

Maybe. Check what speed you are getting a few more times (at different times of day/week) to see what sort of maximums you are getting.

If it is consistantly around the 4/5Mbps mark then it's not worth paying a premium for a 24Mbps speed you will never achieve. Check with the ISP to check what speeds they think you should be expecting, and if they are similar to what you are seeing you could ask whether there is a more appropriate/cheaper package which would be more suitable for your needs. Or of course if you are outside your minimum contract length you could look into changing ISP.

Lots more info and advice can be found in the N&IC forum or www.adslguide.com
