Downloaded Red Alert 3 demo today. Can't say I've ever played these sorts of games much before, hardly at all in fact. Worth trying out the demo I suppose, though I've heard this one's pants.
Supreme Commander Forged Alliance by far. Get the Forged Alliance Forever mod installed - adds multiplayer support and some more recent patching. Plus has a lot of mods built in, love the Black Ops mod
No base building but the Wargame series has the best action by far if you like thinking. If you are the kind who likes spamming a certain type of unit then it is maybe not for you. If using units appropriately and marshalling your forces into a coherent body is your thing then take a look.
I think it would also be Supcom:FA cant say I have played anything better, did play Supcom 2 and while not bad its way too much of a step back from FA.
Cant say I have ever enjoyed C&C all that much once Total Annihilation came out it made those sorts small RTS's of games redundant for me and really I still like to play the original now and again.
Found starcraft to be dull and way too small after playing FA.
You might want to try Spring RTS:
Basically it is a opensource engine that was meant to be a Total Annihilation clone but in 3D, but now you can also play a bunch of other mods that are similar to TA but also some very different. It is free so you have nothing to lose and if you liked the original TA you will love it.
