What the hell is going on in this country regarding dentistry?

My dentist used Covid as excuse to remove all NHS patients from the surgery. I'd been going there for 22 years so decided to take up one of their Denplan options. £23 a month I think it is. Most treatments however are a fraction of the cost of NHS. I thinka root canal on NHs is £250 but it's £50 with this plan as an example.

However I kinda think it's worth it when you have a dentist you trust. NHS dentistry is dead and it won't be around in a few years as more move to a model where they can make more money.

Jus another thing down the drain in the UK. Slowly sinking ship.

My dentist has said that she is going private and she has 2,000 patients. a lot of money to be made off of the private sector.

But have you moved house or area? Seems all spaces are taken by older people and only slots come free are due to death rather then any expansion.....
That's a good point, must be harder when moving to a new area to get on the list. I know when my mum moved away then came back she struggled to get in anywhere and even then that dentist may not be all that good or may not feel comfortable with them.

When I was growing up pretty much everyone did, at least within my circle of acquaintances, even those well off, the only people with private dental care were mega wealthy. And it worked so there was no reason to do anything different. Although in hindsight for a couple of things I'd have gone private if I'd realised it was an option as there was the possibility of having a more advanced procedure and avoiding future issues (probably) but being in my late teens at the time I didn't have awareness of that and no one bothered to inform me.
Growing up I was with an NHS dentist but when I got into my 20s I decided to go with Denplan, Its about £20 a month although was a bit cheaper when I signed up 20 years ago. They like a lot of places are not accepting NHS patients now so if I wanted to move away from Denplan Id need to find another practice but tbh I like the guy...he is great at explaining everything and making people feel relaxed, which is nice for me as someone who really hates going(more a personal space issue rather than fear of pain related).

Also Its not really a great cost per month, I like the fact that generally I don't have to pay any extra...like last year for a tooth extraction and a reconstruction of another plus 6 monthly hygienist sessions.

In for root canal on Tuesday, a first so not sure what that's going to feel like.

I had a root canal on denplan. I never felt any pain at all apart from small ***** of the needles. Everything else completely painless.

Everything explained in depth at each stage and completed in 3 sessions. It's been great for me. Check ups and hygiene sessions included each year and the root canal only cost me £50. Was £250 with NHS. Spreading the cost out and what feels like better service is worth it for your teeth.

If nhs isn't paying doctors enough nhs care will go way of dentistry.

After all.. If all doctors went private, what option will anyone have?

Its a slippery slope to the USA method where if you are poor you just die.

Yep. But the conservatives won't admit that. They just lie about it while quietly running public services in to the ground. There are millions of people who paid their National Insurance for years and when they are actually ill, just get told there is no service any more.

I wouldn't mind if they tell it as it is, but what I can't stand is all the lying.

Yeah it's the lying that gets me.
We need an honest... Look public, this situation is ****. If we don't do x, y, z soon you can kiss your nhs goodbye and we might as well abandon it now and save the cash.

They have no reason to stop lying. Lying puts them on the desired trajectory. The Mail (etc) will happily reinforce their lies to a general public that want to believe (and keep voting Tory).

As awful as the Tories are, their lies are transparent. We just have an electorate that will happily go where they lead. A lot of them really are voting to make themselves worse off, but they have this misguided idea that anything other than the Tories is dirty communism, and the right and true path for the UK is unhinged capitalism.

Do I see it changing? Not really. The people want to be whipped and the Tories are more than happy to oblige.

I must be quite lucky with ours. On NHS me and the family get our 6 monthly check ups and in the rare time we need an emergency appointment we usually get seen the same/next day. They are however quite strict with missed appointments. 2 no shows in a row and you’re struck off the list

A lot of people in this country lean towards a slightly right of centre position which is poorly catered for these days, so just vote Tory. This is the problem with not having a proper option to vote as a spoilt ballot to force the political system to go back to the drawing board so to speak.

Am I right I saying that I’d you needed that root canal in 12 months it would have cost you £326?

Thats still going is it? I remember back in the 90's I think it was my very good dentist suddenly announced he was going private but I could sign up to Denplan for £30 a month I think it was, I was like "how much?!" being a penniless student at the time it was more than I could afford so I switched to another NHS dentist in a less salubrious part of town with a couple of Iranian immigrants both dentists both very good but not as popular with the public it would appear and were happy with what they could get they were very good actually still regret losing them but moved away from the area so it wasn't practical. It was getting harder to find NHS even then but they were still available.

The wind of change was blowing and now finding an nhs is like searching for a needle in a haystack and successive govts have done nothing to reverse the trend other NHS services will be next its difficult to get a GP appointment and nigh on impossible for lesser things like chiropodist was actually advised to go private for that which i did and the one I did see even said she used to work for the NHS and nows works private only
