Please help!

Boss wants a new external hard disk but it must be as fast as an internal one. The only thing I can think of is an external sata solution.

Not entirely sure what I need as his PCs motherboard doesnt have any sata ports.

So far I have come up with:

sata hard disk
icybox caddy
adaptec sata card

How does the power work? Does the caddy have an ac adapter or do you need to somehow draw the power from the pc?

Thanks!

It will connect throught the usb port and has an ac adapter, you`ll not need the sata card.

No, yes and no. The OP's requirement is for a disk which is as fast as an internal one, hence eSATA is the only option (other than SCSI but let's not go there).

The big trick is to make sure that you get the correct bits - the SATA card needs to have an external port, the caddy needs to support SATA internally and externally etc. Once you get those bits sorted then it should be plain sailing.

EDIT: Not sure where the data cable will come from (hopefully the caddy but worth confirming), eSATA is a different connector to internal SATA so normal SATA cables won't work.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB ST3250620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-079-SE)
Icy Box External Enclosure IB-360AStUS SATA + USB Combo - Black/LED (HD-004-BT)
Vantec Serial ATA PCI Host Card (CC-000-VA)

would that work? where would I get a suitable cable from? sata>esata or esata>esata

Thanks guys!

I wouldn't go the Icy Box route if I were you - very bad reputation for killing off HDD's.

Take a look at this thread. It's the new CoolerMaster SATA Enclosure. I'm currently running it SATA>USB2.0 and tbh I can't notice any speed differences from when the HDD was inside my machine.
