What to do next...

i didnt shortlist, i test drove those over a period of about 6-9 months during which time my priorities changed a bit. I would love to have a car solely for fun but I have to commute first & foremost, just like the OP :(

the advantage of the current 2.2cdti is the Aluminium block which makes it significantly lighter than a typical diesel but my car isn't light by any stretch, it has pretty much every option available including dual zone climate control, cruise control, panoramic roof & 18" alloys.

I haven't read through all the bickering so may be repeating what has already been said...

You were impressed by the power delivery of the Diesel Passat, which diesel haters aside is fair enough tbh. Therefore something which delivers a big surge of power would probably be better for you than something like an RX-8 which even if you ignore the daft fuel economy needs to be revved to get the power out of it.

In all honesty it sounds like a standard diesel or maybe a turbo charged hot hatch are what you are after.

...DARE I suggest...a diesel passat? :)
oh please dont! Our company cars are an 03 2.0tdi Passat, an 07 2.0TDI Passat and a 04 Merc C220 CDI. However much I try I can't have fun in any of them :p & if he was impressed by the power delivery of the soft, sluggish & heavy Passat he'd love the firmer, nippier Civic.

I'm seriously thinking about doing a back to back test of the FN2 and ICDTI Civic in a few weeks time, i want to see what all the fuss is about.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I took a 2.2 diesel Civic for a spin at lunch today and im very impressed! It was an 06 plate with 88k on the clock I think. Only let down was there were a few rattles going on in the cabin which the guy said was expected on the 06's. That and im not too keen on the blue!
Ive found a black 08 2.2 Type S with 45k on the clock a little ways up the road which i've booked to see at the weekend. If its as good as im hoping it is then ill probably go for it even though its £1.5k more than I originally budgeted for...
Are there any common faults I should be looking out for on these?
A quick google shows a few threads regarding the clutch slipping after a while on the 2.2 but sounds more like wear n tear to me. The fuel cap can be a bugger to open at times too.
Anything else to watch out for?

That is true however if it's an 06 & it's done that many miles then I'm pretty confident that it would have been changed for an uprated clutch by now, my 57 plate failed at 35,000 miles & Honda UK supplied a brand new uprated clutch and flywheel. The 08 already has the uprated clutch iirc.

put it in 3rd or 4th at around 1500RPM then floor it, do this a few times & if possible try it on a bit of a hill, if there are any clutch issues you'll see the clutch slip at around 2000-3000 rpm.

apart from that pretty flawless cars

I'm not sure this is entirely correct, with the RX-7 yes but as far as I was aware the rotor tips are now ceramic and a lot stronger. As long as it is looked after properly they should see you much further?

Agreed. If the tips have gone at 60K then it's not been maintained very well! RX7 non-turbo's can go for 100+K, turbo's for 80K or so if well serviced and a regular thrashing (minus bouncing off the limiter, that's always a bad idea). RX8's should be a good 80K+ if well maintained. Thrashing rule applies again. Yes, thrashing is good in a rotary.

And I don't recommend one for you, they're great fun, but not what you're looking for IMO!

Octavia VRS?

Well apart from the VSA pump failure around the 55 - 07 sorta range so i'd want something newer than that.

£1500 fix at the main dealer, £800 for a specialist company to fix.

He needs to drive some more cars, i don't mind the 2.2 I-CDTI engine at all but i really don't rate the Civic.

I picked up an rx8 last month.

To the person who says they only last 60k, then you are not looking after it and using incorrect oil! They can easily last till 100k with maintenance!

To the person who achieved only 17mpg - were you sitting in traffic a lot then flooring it everywhere or something? My commute to work of 9miles is very mixed and I achieve 23mpg easily. I drove to Scotland to see a friend, I put a full tank in, just shy of 70quid. I managed 325miles. Around 29mpg cruising on the motorway.

For tHe guy who called it gutless... It's a 1.3 with a 9k rev limit. It's just as gutless as the very UNpopular civic type r and s2ks... ;)

Some people need to stop listening to bull**** and readup for themselves...

And

Welcome to the Internet, the home of hysteria. Things you should also know... Diesels cost £1000 a month in repairs, 4 cylinders or less and you're just gay and if it's not a BMW AMG Mondeo then you've bought the wrong car.

Ps VW Golfs are ****.

Thrown out some bait hoping to reel in a big one?
