What upgrades to do on my MTB

Its gona be a fair while before I actually order any new rims/hubs/tires as I need to be able to afford it :( (I' only 16)
Also the DT Swiss EX 5.1 XC-FR Rims are on 6 weeks restocking @ CRC.

Are the prices quoted @ CRC on tyres (IRC Mibro Tubeless £32) each or for a pair?
Also, does anything special need to be done to the rims to accept tubeless tyres?

Currently this is what I'm thinking
Hope XC Disc Front Disc Gun Metal 32h £0 - Blue not in stock

DT Swiss EX 5.1 XC-FR Disc 32h Black £20.00

DT Swiss Spokes Competition Stainless DB Black 2mm-1.8mm £5.00

Hope XC Disc Rear Disc Blue 32h Titanium Freehub £20.00

DT Swiss EX 5.1 XC-FR Disc 32h Black £20.00

DT Swiss Spokes Competition Stainless DB Black 2mm-1.8mm £5.00

DT Swiss Nipple Upgrade Brass Pro-lock Black Set Pair of Wheels(DH/FR/XC) £9.99

USE Spin Stix Pair Blue Titanium £34.99

Selected Package Price £274.97

I dunno about 5.1's but the 6.1's used for downhill etc are supposed to be made of cheese this year, even dt swiss said it. They are going back to the 2005 6.1 design next year to solve the problem. As i said,im not sure if there is any problem with the 5.1's.

Also, if you are chatting about XTR mechs and shifters, i'd consider this years SRAM X-9 system. I prefer the snappy shifting and the new x-9 is almost the same as last years x-0 minus the carbon bits. It will be a lot cheaper than XTR and almost as good.

Was riding my brothers bike today with sram........its a dream compared to my own bike. Its like a sequencial gearbox in some cases. The xtr front mech and shifter does feel nice though. Still silly money. :o

The 5.1's are meant to be stronger than the 6.1's. The 5.1's were made soft on purpose, fine if you can afford to replace rims every 2 weeks.

Ok.
Care to explain how cleats work and how easy/hard it is to get in, and more importantly out.

They are better. Just make sure you spend 5 minutes practicing getting in and out away from the road. Wobbling about trying to get your feet in while a 40 ton artic is up your backside isnt a good idea, from experience.

As I said before, It's gonna be a while before I get the wheels (money etc.)

My mate today told me something along the lines of Don't get the front with quick release as if (when) you decieded to upgrade the fork (planning on getting a RockShox Pike late this yr/early next yr) the quick release wouldn't work with it as its a thruaxle.
This true?
Can anyone explain it better?

True. The Pikes require a 20mm thru axle (hence one of my previous posts). Something like a Hope Bulb would be ideal. For pure XC a Pike might be overkill but it depends what riding you do. For All Mountain they are ideal.

In response to an earlier Q, you can get a Stan's tubeless kit to make any wheelset tubeless.

It may be worth while upgrading the front disc to a larger size. Going from 160mm to 180mm or even 200mm makes a big difference to braking and shouldn't cost more than £30. Or if you fancy decent brakes that don't just have an on/off action ditch the hayes and get some hopes as they're much nicer.

its funny you say this because recently i was reading that peaty uses avid carbon's (due to sponsorship deals) with 185's front and rear and he grooves out the pads so they are less ''grippy'' and uses slight pressure on the levers leading into turns to get the best speed/line and david vasquez uses a new hope freeride brake that has huge advances in 'bite point control'' which is pretty much the same idea but manufactured like that, not a modification.

This idea of this style braking is only now coming to the surface as most dh riders approach the turn full speed then slam the brakes on just enough so they don't stack during the corner then speed up again yet obviously with the new idea peaty/vasquez can regulate their speed perfectly to get round the corner and carry as much speed as possible.

With regards to the Pikes, you have two options really.

a) get hope pro 2 hub for the front, which can be changed to QR/20mm axel easily

b) get revelations instead of Pikes. Yes the Pikes have a little more travel and a little less flex, but unless you are doing 3ft plus jumps, they are probably overkill.

Hmm. So hubs wise its either:
Hope Bulb
OR
Hope PRO 2

As they're both good & can be changed to QR/20mm axel easily.

So, what's the difference between them (other than £20 each)
Oh, and either I'm being thick again, or the Bulb's aren't on the hopegb site.

Hi, got some Pro-2's built up from CRC with Mavic 717 rims. Real nice, and strong. Oh, and got them in a bling red, matches my panaracer tyres

Yep my fire xc pros have a red wall and i'm all blinged up with red hope headset, bar ends etc... Will probably change my xt hubs for pro 2s on xm321s or xm719s

Hmm, What would a complete new braking system cost?
