What watch do you wear?

He said Grand Seiko, not Seiko :D
Oops, sorry! :o
The Pelagos uses Grade 2, can't find specs for the specific model, but Grand Seiko generally use Grade 5, which is much harder.

My dealer was wearing a Pelagos and advised me not to get too upset when I get my first scratch....
Ok interesting, thanks. My Pelagos seems really hard, I have banged it many times as I mainly use it as a summer sports watch and it's still looking good!
The Pelagos marks easy but can be rubbed out with an eraser. It will look different for a while until the titanium oxidises again
I just allowed mine to oxidize and it basically self-healed.

However I don't care about scratches in general even on my most expensive watches (at least I have never had any truly obnoxious scratches so far), it's just wear and tear and shows the watch is used and appreciated.

Not really bothered that it's scratched , it's more to do with I thought it was unscratchable.
I have the Pelagos as well , that is matte/brushed titanium .
Have found that GS use a coating on top of the Titanium that needs sending back to Japan to be repolished.for £1200.
Will give that a miss , whilst searching for polishing titanium came across people using erasers on there Pelagos's to remove scratches but if you try that on the GS Zaratsu polish it goes dull and never gets its shine back.

Oh, right, I see. Well, there is no such thing as an unscratchable watch, regardless of what Titanium is used. Just accept any scratches that happen as part of life and wear and tear.

I might even go down to Grand Seiko in Bond Street and see the bloke who sold me the watch and tell him how traumatised i am looking at a watch every morning with scratches on and see if i can get a freebee :)

To re-open the discussion higher up the page about "homage" watches, it's great that some of you are keeping the luxury watch companies going but the Seiko-based watches coming from China are genuinely amazing value. I bought such a watch from eBay for my son. He works in a high-end Mayfair restaurant and has had endless compliments about it. I have a Steeldive something-or-other and have had people assume it is a Rolex. These sorts of mechanical watches for £100 or less are keeping smartwatches off people's wrists and that can only be a good thing.

Not really sure about homage Seiko, you can get an old Seiko from ebay for £250 and it will go up in value. I doubt if the homages will. Obviously if its something like a 6309 7040 or 6105 they are becoming too expensive.

I’m in a watch wearing predicament.

I love a traditional watch, and have a Tissot and a Tag. However I’ve been wearing an Apple Watch Ultra for the past year as I like the geekiness of it, and the health/exercise tracking.

I’d love to wear my Tag or Tissot as my everyday again but I get major FOMO when I don’t wear my Apple Watch :o

Do a Kevin o Leary and double wrist it! :p

If you want to keep your Apple Health data along with all your messages and notifications on your wrist (ugh) then there is no alternative other than wearing 2x watches.

The other alternative is of course getting a smart ring (eg: Oura ring) that will look discreet while giving you good health tracking data, or getting a fitness tracker (eg Fitbit charge or Gamin Vivosmart) for daily health tracking which will be more noticeable than the ring.

Yep, I used to wear a mech and a Huawei for health tracking. The wife had the same dilemma so I bought her an Oura and she loves it.

The third option is to bin the FOMO and wean yourself off the health watch. I did it, and it was tough, but honestly I think my quality of life has improved. Instead of checking my phone to see how I slept, I ask "do I feel tired?". Instead of fitness tracking I monitor how out of breath I am when exercising :D

I don't mean a homage to Seiko I mean a watch that looks like a Rolex or an Omega but which has an NH35 movement from Seiko.

Is it badged Seiko or Rolex/Omega?

If the former, I like them - but they aren't homages - they are frankenwatches, normally hand made. If they are the latter - they are fakes, which is not cool at all.

If it's the in-between, like San Martins etc, they are just "fakers" without any story. Also not cool.

Obviously this is a reflection of my own morals :)

What makes a San Martin a fake? It looks similar to many Submariner dive watches but has no fake logo on it front or back. Or a Pagani? Or many others. Dive watches all look pretty similar from a Tag to a Rolex to a Tudor to a Seiko. Something is a fake if it has logos of the "real" item and passes itself of as the branded item. If it looks similar, is it a great surprise? And is it a bad thing?

For the record, although I own a Steeldive "homage", I also own two Farer watches as my preferred dailies.

Well because their entire business model is making lookalike watches. It has no USP other than being psuedo fake. The brand is one of imitation. That doesn't turn me on at all.
