What watch do you wear?

Watch wearers of ocuk,

Have 10k which I am looking to invest in a pair of watches. I really like the look of the Rolex submariner and have a few questions.

Is my budget realistic, what can I expect to happen to the value over time and is there anything I need to look out for when buying?

Thanks in advance.

Good man! Buying watches of this sort at retail is...beyond me.

But some people like the minty fresh thing that comes with dropping an extra few k, so who am I to argue! The more they do so, the more us lot get to buy back cheaper :D

I was shocked when I found out it was 10 years old. The servicing levels are outstanding. It looked brand new!

There's something about certain makes of watches that seem to wear so very well that they manage to keep their 'new'(ish) sheen so well. Not to mention the obvious one of some people not wearing them at all due to the cost...

My 16610 Sub is 25 years old (I've only owned it for a portion of that) but someone commented just the other day on why I had bought a new Sub.

(I'm igoring the fact that they should easily be able to see it's not the 116610, but hey ho, I'm not turning down a compliment on how new it looks given its age!).

Budget is realistic for at least one. Maybe two without date. Brand new or fairly new.

Rolex's hardly lose value in my limited experience, but have a look around. I Would say most I had a look at probably dropped value by around 10-15% and seem to hold value there.

I am not an expert though and never owned one.

I do like receiving the odd compliment as well.

Regarding wearing expensive watches. I had a similar view, but then I thought why spend that much on something that you really want, to not wear it? Dad has a Seamaster and looking to get a Planet Ocean soon, he said to me just bloody wear it. What good is it in a box.

However the first time I scuffed it (out drunk) it felt like a part of my soul had died. But having seen what the magicians can do come a service it puts my mind at ease that the watch can be returned to a thing of perfection.

My watch bracelet and clasp have numerous scratches now which are visible at close range but it still has that new watch gleam to it which I can't see fading over the years. Most watches like these will be exactly the same. Will look like new from a few feet away whatever the age.

Very realistic budget for steel.

I put my cash into a 16610 as I think the more classic lines will age far better than the new(er) 116610 with its (in my opinion) over-sized lugs and crown guard. I can't argue with the now solid links being a good move (you get used to the weight) and the micro-adjustment on the clasp. The switch to a ceramic bezel is perhaps the biggest one as it'll resist scratches far better than the alu. But...break it and you're in for a BIG bill, compared to the alu.

What about the 16600 Sea Dweller? They were a more expensive time piece than the 16610 Sub, but second hand they then fell well in line with them, so you get a nice 'saving'. I also really like the cyclops-less look.

A 14060/M is also a very classic piece, in my opinon.

Oh and with regards returns...hopefully someone who truly invests in them will come out of the woodwork.

I bought mine with the view of being able to sell it for virtually no loss in the future. I think seeing a positive ROI is unlikely on a watch such as this, which is common and with no special features. The 'Red Sub' thing and the 'COMEX' ones etc. may skew people's ideas about investing in Rolex with the aim of a decent return...

Thanks for the positive responses so far.

I wouldn't say a return in the future is be all and end all. I mean the returns on that sort of money in the bank is so small that I'd rather own something I can look at and enjoy for a while.

I don't know an awful lot about residual values, but I seem to keep reading that Rolex Daytonas are a pretty sound investment, though you would only get 1 for the budget.

It's hard for me to put myself back into the position of not knowing what it is, so I can't really say.

IWC is a very stealth make indeed. The watches that reach into the actual higher end of production watches (I don't mean precious metal Rolex), e.g. IWC, Vacheron, Patek etc. I think most people haven't a clue who/what they are.

I think AP, especially the Royal Oak seem to be slipping into the spotlight a little bit, mainly by the disgusting jewel encrusted things celebrities, rappers etc are wearing.
I'd love a Grand Seiko ********* and/or a PP Calatrava partially for the stealth reasons. At a short glance, it could be a £19.99 Sekonda from Argos instead of a ~£35,000 masterpiece from the perspective of someone who doesn't know what they're looking at.

daytona is sound at around 10% less than current retail, any more than that and you will need to hang onto it for a few years to get your money back

they arent as scarce as once they were, i got one 3 weeks after i decided i wanted one, from the netherlands.

SWT have a "Double Red" and a COMEX at the minute. The DR is £25k and the COMEX is £57k. The history with the COMEX is really nice including the dive logs of the guy it was originally issued to. I'd link to it but the mods might get upset.

I'd agree that on standard Sea-Dweller and Subs you'll probably make a loss albeit not a large one when you come to sell it on unless you're planning on keeping it for quite some time? I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly though ;-)

Go nuts with a couple of second hand Rolexs if you want http://watchfinder.co.uk/Rolex/Submariner/Watches?sort=salesprice_ets asc

As you'll see in the link the watch ages vary but prices are on a similar scale.
