Wondering if someone can help...

I’ve been saving up for awhile now and I’ve been offered datejust for £3900 with papers and box. Is that a good deal or am I being ripped off? It’s 36mm from 1985.

My dad has the exact same model. Unfortuntely pretty unpopular as far as rolexs go, given the small size and two tone. When I priced it up for him, it looked to be worth 3 - 3.5k.

without looking at the price, check it is a factory diamond dial (looks it) and you really need to look into the state of stretch in the bracelet

you need to see a picture held like this

good

bad

My thoughts

I’m not a fan of diamonds on watches, for the following reason.

Diamonds are recognised by a large volume of people and as a result, it requires a low level of education and sophistication to know that by wearing diamonds you can communicate that you are wearing a luxury item. What extra effort has the person wearing the diamond demonstrated? Almost none !!

For me this means that while diamonds will tell a large volume of people that you are wearing a luxury item, it doesn't communicate anything beyond the fact that you can afford it. Thus, there is very little sophistication value to diamonds.

So while diamonds almost universally have luxury value, they come with almost no sophistication value.

It is for the above reason that many luxury watch lovers do not find watches with diamonds tasteful.

It's also a Rolex. Some people think the same of them!

That bracelet sag is bad. It looks better because he's angled the watch backwards, so it droops less relative to one held actually upright.

And OP - you seem set on it, despite the general comments saying it's too pricey and not a particularly desirable piece. So buy it.

I trust the good people of ocuk, so will listen to advice given.

If the general feeling is avoid then I will. The diamond thing isn’t something I’m particularly looking for or to avoid.

Any reputable sites or traders you would recommend to get one?

Honestly, I'd join TZ-UK, build up your membership time there, learn a lot about what you like in a watch and what to look out for, and then you'll be able to access the sales section for members. Most weeks, someone will have been saved a fortune by the expertise on there, alerting them to a fake or dodgy dealer who has turned out to be a bad egg. The sales section is so oggled that anything iffy gets called out for further checking by the resident experts (I mean that term in its true definition, not some forum keyboard warrior who's read a few Hodinkee articles).

Save your cash and give some time to that place, and you'll be rewarded. There are three DJs on there at the moment for under 2k, but two are without bracelets, and one has an incorrect one for the period. But it's all declared as such.

What’s the going rate for a sub date from 2006?
As noted previously by others, Chrono24 is useful as a price guider as there are so many examples on there. Things like the condition, the completeness of the set etc. all can make the price vary by a k or more. If in decent nick with box and papers, likely circa 5k.

I know I'm asking in a thread full of watch enthusiasts, but what's people's opinions on MVMT watches? They look more expensive than they cost just not sure what the quality and craftsmanship will be like. It will be a present to myself from my partner but having already got me a few things there isn't much left in the budget.
