If they change the forum software so that page loads take 2-3 times longer (not just first paint, but fully loaded) and it becomes more cluttered/harder to read. One of the main reasons this forum is so good, other than the active userbase, is the fact that it's fast, simple and very readable on many devices. Long may it last, and I do say that the internet is due a reckoning when it comes to page weight, complexity, clutter etc. Simple is best (and is even better for the environment due to CO2 production). If it were up to me, most sites would be like this and have little or no javascript, just what's needed to do the essential functionality.

A couple of forums that I used to use closed down their forum in favour of Facebook, by setting up a group page on there. I just couldn't keep track of the posts that were made - seems to be no easy way to re-read old posts or finding my past posts. Sadly, a lot of long-time forums are succumbing to Facebook.
So for OcUK, I would probably stop posting if they went down the Facebook route.
If OcUK went down the Reddit route instead, then that's not as bad because Reddit is probably the closest you get to being a forum without actually being one. OcUK would manifest as a sub-reddit and it's relatively easy to find your posts on there.

It has it blips at the start, but it's hardly terrible

Fully agree. This year is the first time I’ve used the ignore button and blocking out the racists has greatly improved my experience
Even as a cross section of society the forum has so few "lefties" as to be almost non existent.
This forum is very right leaning and yes it has a small number of very vocal members who are slightly to the right of Mussolini and are triggered by the slightest of comments.
All this talk of left wing right wing... wings are wings just forget about it. Most of the timer I don't even bother looking at usernames or anything, just respond to a comment worth responding to. That is the best way to live eLife with the occassional debate with @Raymond Lin 
The forum gets accused of being too right wing and too left wing all the time by the different groups of people. The fact that both think it's too far the other way says to me that we have the balance about right.
