What would you buy for £2k?

not much between the primera sport+ and the Ghia X tbh so id say it depends whether you want a revvy 2.0 or a more torquey 2.5v6.

hehe funny you should call the 2.0 revvy but not the v6, peak power on these things is @ 6.8k rpm....strange for a v6, a damnsite revvier than the 2.0l zetec in fact :)

And before anyone uses my car as an example of them being unreliable, only 2 things have really gone wrong with my car until the engine died of oil starvation which is partially my fault, a slight design flaw which means keeping on top of the oil level is uber important on these engines where as most will forgive you if they go a little under.

Clutch and alternator, but both of them were done by cowboys thus turned into much bigger dramas :(

It's comfy and spacious but only really in the front so it depends how much space you need. Has a fair amount of kit though.

You'll spend the purchase price again over a year of two keeping it on the road. How many people who only want to spend £2k on a car have that sort of income to keep running something which does 0-60 in 11 seconds?

0-60 is far from the top of the list of priorities for a 520i driver!

Sure, you'll find plenty of scabby ones, but, equally plenty of pristine ones that are still in great nich yet commanding peanuts.

My dads e39 is just such a car, it still looks like a new car, drives like a new car is well over 210k miles and probably not worth even £2k

Somebody will be laughing if he eventually changes it.

For 2k you could do a lot worse than an e39!

e39 > Mondeo. RASP or not.

An Omega is a good choice, but BMW > Vauxhall in my book.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/182844.htm thats quite a nice example of a gt

with a couple of interior pics on this one http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/165554.htm

Mondeo is slightly ahead, in my eyes but the chromoflair primera looks nice with some 17" multi spokes on.

I guess thats lucky really becuase they have no real choice! The 520i is poor - you pay the running costs of the bigger engined models but get none of the performance. Where is the fun is that?

These are very rare - most super cheap E39's are a state - they've had 10 years of abuse and are ready to empty the bank account of the next owner. Pristine examples like your fathers are few and far between!

I've owned both. With the right budget, correct. On a budget, no, you don't want an E39 - get a Mondeo. Plus the really old 520i's look... rubbish. By the time you've changed the lights, added Sport pack, etc etc suddenly you've spent nearly £4k!

:) gwan then, point out what isn't stock ford? only things are the springs which are koni but you cant even see them, and clear side repeaters....the wheels are ford parts from a higher model rather than a stock st24/ghia x but it's hardly modded :)

Go and drive a primera 2.0 gt it's one the most underated cars ever. some of the later cars (gtse le i think)are very well equipt.
i remember my p10 2.0e zx still the best primera, suprised so many people away from the lights. :D then i tuned it and it was just jaw dropping.

yea your right, only prob with the ZX and eGT now is that they are nearly all rusting away:/

but you cant go wrong with a P11 GT, GT SE, GT LE. the P11 does handle better than the P10, but adds a bit of uneeded weight.

As above what would you get for about 2k, its not the max but ideally what id like to spend, been looking at some older mondeo 2.5v6's etc, want something thats comfy, spacious and has some kit.

If comfy, spacious and has some kit is the priority then a Volvo v70 or Saab 93 would be ideal. Pick the right engine and they're pretty quick as well.

well i must have totally flipped, i ended up buying a 2001 Y PUG 306 2.0 HDI, was £500 over budget, but will be cheap as chips to run, already covered over 500 miles from tank with a bit under 1/4 left. will do for a few months
