What would you do with a q6600?

I've just upgraded to a z77 mobo, i5, ssd and ddr3 ram and wondering what to do with my old parts.. after checking the members market it doesn't appear a g0 q6600, asus p5q pro and 8gb of ocz ram is worth much... which has got me thinking a bit.

What have you guys done with your older hardware? did you make them into underclocked media centres or home servers or did you just part with them for the current market value? I'm quite partial to my q6600 as it's a steady workhorse and performs great unclocked - almost seems a shame to get rid for such little cash (around 100 for the bundle it appears)

Inspire me please!

I would just personally sell it, I'm not a fan of clutter laying around and I would be happy with the money.

Else you can just turn it into some server/media centre/test machine.

Can a standard mobo fit into a case smaller than a midi case? I kinda like the idea of a second server system - probably screenless and just remotely log in?

If I can't sell the components I usually store them in the garage until I build up enough to make another PC. Sure they're not usually high spec but it makes for some awesome LAN nights if a friend doesn't own a computer :D though I usually just end up selling said PC to said friends cheaply.

Undervolt it and make a mineral oil fish tank HTPC, needlessly messy but cool in an oh so geeky way.

Haha just youtubed that .... looks awesome! shame I move so much so it'd be a bit of a pain but I'd totally have done that if I was in one place for longer! sweeeet

Despite being a terrible hoarder myself, with things like that it's usually best to get rid now, as all that's going to happen is it will sit in a drawer for another year, then you'll get annoyed with it and sell it for even less.

Alternatively, CPU dogtag would be epic, I'm sure there are hilarious things people have done with mobos as well.

Not got any friends or family with a Core 2 Duo machine who could do with an upgrade to a Q6600?

It might be dated tech to us, but it'd still be a big improvement over most desktop PCs people live with out there. If not, either sell the components, or chuck it together in a cheap case and sell it as a complete machine to someone.

I kept mine and it is now my daughters machine - q6600 @ 3.6ghz with a 4850 graphics card - she uses it for the internet and minecraft. Still going strong and never misses a beat :)

I've just sold a q6600 based bundle albeit separately in the end. Got 80 quid for it. It would otherwise have been stored until it was worth less or nothing. I've learnt that lesson over the years.

I've still got socket A machines that are adequate for a lot of peoples use but they're worth zero.

Not to mention mobile phones, PDAs, goggle displays, mini TVs....the list is endless.

yup sell it off sharpish unless you have a use for it.

my old 775 setup went to my boy for a bit of light gaming :) I can almost justify an upgrade from sandy to haswell to give him a 2600 next year :)

but seriously bank a 100 for your kit if not a bit more and stick it towards your next hardware purchase

Last month when I went from a q6600 to an i5 3570K I've boxed it all the old gear up and keeping it until I get a case/psu/some hdds and gonna bring it back to life as a small home server/media center.

pass it down to some family member/relative or a friend even, thats if you're not selling it.

I would sell it coz am a tight git ;)
