What would you do?

I would offer to pay towards its real value... £500 is pretty steep considering you can get a Grade A refurbished model in the UK for that price inc P&P I doubt anyone would have paid £500 simply for a 2nd hand one.

I dont understand where people get these valuations of their amazing macbooks from, its really common to see 2nd hand 2011 macbooks on ebay listed at around 200 and 300 and not even get a single bid. So I would offer to replace it with one of those and if they say no then dont loose any sleep over it as they are just trying to play you, well, your sister.

Insurance (if they actually have it) or nothing. Pay the excess. It's what it's there for.

If they go on about premium increases then offer what you think is reasonable for their inconvenience.

How old was the macbook?

I'm assuming year or two?

Oh you spilled water on hardware now worth 500 quid. Now you have to buy us a brand new up to date model for 1600.

**** off.

Edit: 5 years old?! mate tell them to go swivel. That is just completely unreasonable. Also if she pays them for the laptop demand the broken one, reason is usually sometimes if you dry out hardware it can work again.

Insurance is there for a reason, they'll be able to claim for a brand spanking new laptop after accidental damage. Your sister should offer to pay the excess and that's all.

As for "OMG, AN INSURANCE CLAIM IS BAD, MY RENEWAL WILL GO THROUGH THE ROOF" - That's rubbish. A claim doesn't automatically mean premiums will increase. A few years ago, following a claim of over £10,000 after a near lightning strike, my premiums actually went down when the renewal came through.

Yep, take it apart as much as possible and put it in a bag of rice.
Which will do absolutely nothing whatsoever, a complete and utter waste of time.

PS - Pics of sister? ;)

Yup, it's not like car insurance where you're suddenly a risk and premiums go crazy!

Take it to a rice factory and leave it covered in a sealed environment for few weeks.

Or just pay £500 and tell them to do one.

£500 is more than generous I paid £600 for my mid 2013 rMBP 2 years ago 2nd hand, if they've got a problem with that I'd be inclined to remove that offer and tell them they're getting sod all.

People would seriously consider handing over £500 cash? There is nothing stopping them from taking the money then claiming on insurance anyway.

I can't conprehend how they can even ask for, with a straight face, £1600 for a spanking new one! What sort of person does that??
I'd tell them to claim on their insurance, & offer to pay the excess if I felt guilty.
